I feel I should pipe in- the elbow bend on a drain does more than catch items that fall in. It also acts as an airlock to help prevent methane and other sewer gas from venting into your bathroom. So if you suck the water out with a vacuum, once you get what you were fishing for, put some water back in to restore the airlock, just in case...
