If this is all you do for publicity, then I guess the statement "And in six months who will really remember you - it seems like a cheap 15 minutes of fame / free publicity" might have some validity, but some of us are content with that.
If you're not content with that, I guess the trick is to string together a series of "cheap 15 minutes of fame". Isn't that what the big names do? Congratulations to Louis for his successes. :) |

Any publicity you can turn to your advantage is good publicity. Keeping a name and image before the public is what it is all about. Advertising only works well when it is frequently repeated. People have short memories.
As for remembering the name of the Toucan and not the performer, so what. Like he said, the check goes to the same guy. I know a lot more people remember Danny O'Day, Farffel, Chok wet, and Nestles than remember Jimmy Nelson, but if Jimmy cried about it, it was only on his way to the bank.

Interesting comment about the so what the name of the toucan and not the prformer and then build on this argument. The guy makes his way to the bank. Let me ask this, why do we remember jeff dunham and terry fator? I believe that you ow it to yourself as a performer to always try to achieve a higher goal. And when it comes to ventriliquisme I believe a magic goal is that they remember you instead of a toucan. I believe it will keep you longer in the business.

Never hurts to get your own name out there, but I believe you will find a lot of people who will remember the characters Jeff uses in his act, but won't remember his name. Just goes with the territory.

There is a key difference between "Publicity" and "Advertising". Advertising by definition is a "paid form". That carries other meanings to the public.
As an old marketing professor, I can assure you we would rather have good publicity than good advertising for two reasons. Being free is certainly acceptable. But the major reason, is because publicity tends to be more credible than advertising. (Someone else is saying it about you!) Bad publicity can cost millions to overcome. (Ask Union Carbide why they immediately sold Glad, Eveready Battery, and Prestone after a chemical spill in India!) In the fall of 2008 I worked a magic convention with a very well known magician, TV celebrity and movie star. The bad publicity he generated from less than 20 minutes on stage is much more expensive than he knows. Immediately, he was taken off the "bid list" for one of the oldest most prestigious magic conventions in the USA. Hours before he would have gotten the gig hands down. He will not even get an invitation. Even if he pays his way into the event, I seriously doubt he will even be introduced from the stage. Bad publicity can certainly hurt. (Also remember that neither the publicity nor the advertising has to be true!) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Bob you really made it clear, thank you for that. Now I understand it. I have a experience of my own where I once did a contest in a magic convention. There someone has seen me who did not like me (for what reasons so ever). I believe perception is projection and he'd made some comment I believe it was not for me but for him. Anyway more then a year later I was in contact with an agency, it looks good and then the agency had to speak with that guy. The agency backed off. Strange is that the agency would absolutely not going with that guy in business but how he speaks about me (publicity) has ruin my relationship with the agency. Let's kick some other difficulty in, in the magic business there is a lot of negative, jealous vibe from magicians to each other. So you can conclude that publicity from lay audience/people is to go for. After all they are the people you will perform for. Thanxs Bob! |

I've spent 22-years in public relations and I can only agree with Bob when it comes to bad publicity having the ability to kill a product or brand of any kind. Don't believe it, ask FEMA. They are still suffering by the mistakes made during Katrina.
I say kudos to anyone generating positive publicity for themselves. The trick is to repeat it as often as possible and make it look fresh. As it was stated before, keep it up, do it over and over, and get while the getting is good. Take care, Derrick |

FEMA with a change in Congress could need more help than the people they were created to help! Sometimes you can get into a position where whatever you do next is wrong. Unfortunately, it becomes newsworthy no matter what. Programming and journalism are not the same thing. A few years ago, Lucy and I moved to a new place for us. There was no place for us to rehearse on the ranch so we built a 1600 square foot theater on the place. Word got out (at a country store nearby) that we were building a halfway house for drug rehab. Ultimately, we had to bring neighbors to come see the finished theater and we even hosted an art festival and fund raiser to support the area performing arts (including a free magic show) on the ranch. The gossip changed. We were lucky. No doubt about it, publicity can work for you or against you. You can't afford to ignore it. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
