I just watched DVD #1 and I was totally amazed. I had an internal struggle because half of me wanted to go to the explanation section and the other half wanted to just stay amazed and in Wonder (no pun intended). Needless to say I loved how smooth and classy he came across and I can't wait to pop in # 2 and 3.

Tim,
Next time you get an invitation like that, I want to go along as your key grip. Keep me in mind. I totally agree with everything you said. I would have paid Falanga money to attend those sessions. Tommy is a master. BTW, you recently gave me some info on a chop cup I bought - it's great! Thanks again. Cordially, tr |

Well, I just finished watching Vol. 1 of this set and the other two volumes have instantly jumped to the top of my "must buy" list.
Honestly, I was a bit put off by the number of effects on each dvd. I mean, seriously, Vol. 1 has 5 effects? It seems that the others were about the same in quantity. That was a bit disconcerting and I'm also (sigh) not familiar with Mr. Wonder's other work, so I did not have that as a basis for decision. However, I have seen the demo for "ring...watch...wallet" and was flabbergasted by the effect. I, seriously, figured that I would maybe get it just to have that routine to show my non-magi friends (Wonder performing, not me...lol). And then... I know this a bit odd of me perhaps but...and then... I saw Maven in the back photo and read that he was involved with the discussions. Honestly, when something has Maven's stamp of approval (and I doubt the man would, at this point, appear in something he didn't approve of heartily), my confidence rises exponentially. So, my wife and I sat down this evening and watched through the performance section. She was amazed by "ring, watch, wallet" and then promptly dozed off...lol. She sleeps easily. I continued watching, thinking "hey, this is some solid material"...then came "The Tamed Card." I woke her up. I said, "you have to watch this because this man just blew my mind and my mind doesn't get blown like this much..." and we watched it. And we watched it again. And we watched it again. Every time I watched it, my head hurt a little more. Also, each time, I felt FURTHER from figuring it out, rather than closer... Finally, his cups and balls routine. I can COMPLETELY understand what Max was talking about in the little dinner aside...it's excellent. So different. Personally, I rank this routine and David Regal's routine at the top of my list... So, we went to dinner and the entire time I kept thinking "hurry up...I want to go finish the dvd and watch the portions you (my wife) aren't allowed to watch!" ::grin:: Between seeing the performance and watching the explanations, I read this post...Became a bit bummed at the thought of having NO chance at ever performing Ring, Watch, Wallet. I disagree with Magic Hands that this routine is unattainable to the average magician. While it is, I admit, quite a bit of work and a bit of expense to prepare...it's well worth it. Finally, I concur with the other posters...the information exchanged between Max and Tommy just blew my mind. I nearly feel like I learned more about the performance of magic in that 2 hour DVD than I all my other experiences combined... I highly recommend vol. 1 and can't WAIT to see the other two.... E Dangit...I don't know where else I'd find this, I've tried.. Where is the easter egg on this DVD? I've been all over the screen with my cursor and see no where else to click, I watched all through the end credits (which were, actually, worthwhile) and yet still don't think I've found it. Help? PM me....

If you go to the "Other DVDs" section and go to the Max Maven Videomind page. You just have to put the cursor on the name Max Maven and you will get additional interview footage. This works for all three disks...
BTW, I finished watching the three disks and I have to say that they are among the best. Despite having the usual audience, they actually look stunned at some of the effects (as was I). I was especially impressed with "Tamed Card" and "Deja Vu Card" effects. I also enjoyed the conversations where Tommy talks about the theories of magic and presentation. |

Argh...I figured it would be somewhere in the Videomind section of the "other dvd" menu, I just didn't find it...
Thanks! I knew someone would come through for me.

Yesterday a friend-magician and I were discussing the phenomenon that is Tommy Wonder.
Among all the fantastic rolemodels a magician could have (Tamariz, Vernon, Kaps, Harris, Burger etc.) Tommy is not only alive and kicking, but also someone we can talk with (and sometimes even pick his mind!!!) because we live in little Holland. Though we meet the man a lot, we do not see him perform a lot. So we were very happy he gave a lecture at our club and sold his DVD's. To me seeing him as the guy I know and getting into his performance mode is like Clark Kent taking off his glasses and ripping open his shirt to reveal... I was awestruck! After seeing the DVD's my friend said he reminded him of the class that Fred Kaps had and I thought that was a very just comparison. Although completely different in style and appearance I think Tommy has become living legend already. Being in my thirties I was too young to experience Kaps. Being able to experience Tommy Wonder is a privilage I am truly grateful for. Theonly thing I will recommend is: Go see him live if you have the opportunity.

Here is what I have concluded: Tommy is a great magician, entertainer and thinker. I have a lot to learn from him. He does not, unfortunately, expound detail very well. For instance, to figure out the set up and routine for Tame Card, I had to take notes, rewind, stop, pause, double check, compare to cards in my hand, etc. Eventually, however, I got it. It was a lot of work that could have been avoided if Tommy (or Max) had simply started with the usual: Here is the set up of the packet..." He also tended to minimize, I thought, descriptions of certain gimmicks. Heck... "minimize" is a kind description... he dismissed the "beeper" with words like, oh, you can make one or have someone make it for you..!" I prefer more linear and explicit approaches to descriptions of magic effects, but I am a bit tedious, I suppose. (By the way, I have the same complaint about Harry Lorayne's books; I wish he'd describe the effect before he begins the instructions... I want to know where I am going before I depart!) All of my whining aside, though, I will tell you that, although I bought the DVD to learn a trick or two, I finished by concluding that I had learned more about timing and audience management than about how to do any particular trick. And, I am very impressed with what I learned. I'll either buy the other two DVDs or his books (or maybe both). Tell me, those of you who have Books of Wonder: are the explanations of the effects and the preparations more explicit in their descriptions?

I too want to know if his "Books of Wonder" have more insight on how to make the props or how to set up the cards for Tamed card etc. Thanks

I don't know how Harry has gotten away with not doing that for so long and still is considered a great teacher. Don't get me wrong, he has put out a lot of great stuff over the years and helped me out along the way. I just feel very strongly that an overview of the effect should be given before a description of the handling. At least on the videos you can see the effect. Cordially, tr |

I've just received them today, will be able to discuss with you all very soon.
They came with a video tape and a poster, do they cost money? Or are they gifts? Michael Lam

I too thought the explanation of his beeper was laughable...oh, sure sure, I can just make one myself...slightly more difficult since he gave NO clues as to how to do it. ::grin::
I was quite surprised that Max wasn't a bit more...anal retentive about that sort of thing...overall, however, I still believe this series is amazing.... E

I think it is possibly very easy to get caught up in the exact make-up of something, rather than just absorb the essence of the whole thing. Tommy wonder is obviously an amalgam of magician and mad scientist--and thus enjoys the convoluted foray.
Since the beeper is never to be seen, why not go out to Toys-R-Us and buy a few of those kiddie pagers? Keep one in your pocket, and practice hitting the button on that. My kids have a little toy cell phone that works perfectly. Hope this helps. . . ron |
