Yep?
Jim, you were the one that sent it off tangent: Quote:

So the answer is "No. No one here knows anyone who performs mentalism without a prop."
John Edward uses a whole staff of people who collect information and cue him electronically... props in use. Catholic priests use props in their rituals, vestments, candles, stained glass windows, crosses, chalices, bread wafers... all props. Ministers use fewer props, but still use vestments, crosses, and rituals... more props. Rabbis also use props, but you never hear of a rabbi performing miracles, either; they only back up divine miracles of the distant past. All the psychics and mediums I have seen use props in the act- even palm readers and those who perform with crystal balls or tea leaves... more props. So again, the answer is simply "No. No one here seems to know of any propless mentalist." Why? Do you know one?

Another question could be: without any gimmicks.
as far as I am concerned the cross in the church is a prop but is not a gimmick. it is there for a reason, it sends a strong message as to where you are and why. this is a prop. the whole priest outfit is a prop. religion is filled with props. |

Ah, now you want to talk about gimmicks. That makes more sense. Lots of mentalists can perform without gimmicks. A pad and pen or pencil is not a gimmick. Envelopes don't have to be gimmicked. Blindfolds and ropes don't have to be gimmicked. This opens up a whole new topic... but I think it has been discussed many times before.

A couple of weeks backs I was having dinner with a friend of mine who is a lighting designer. At the end of our dinner he started talking about how light can affect people’s mood. While talking to me he produced a little flashlight-like thing, pointed it towards the restaurant’s ceiling and clicked on it. In a blink, the whole restaurant’s ceiling was covered with stars. We could hear a collective gasp. I hadn’t seen magic like that in a while. He didn’t have to say a word, he didn’t have to forewarn anybody, nor set expectations nor prearrange anything. He simply produced an instantaneous collective moment of wonder with one click .
We can achieve the same thing by words and imagery-oriented work alone and feel very proud of not needing my friend’s little gadget but, would that really top what my friend did? I agree with Lejon. Knowing when and how to use a prop, and understanding the suggestions every object carries within itself, is as important as knowing when props aren’t necessary. Perhaps ‘props’ aren’t the problem, but the convoluted procedures that some props bring with them and subtract from the impact and elegance of a performance. Best, EE |

Lejon's contribution was a very sensible one. I agree with him completely - some level of props sets up the mystery. The prop the TV mediums use is their belief system, their spirits and guides.
And to Johncosta, you mis-quoted me. I did NOT say that priests and rabbis are fake and I did NOT cast doubts on their sincerity. But since you brought up the subject of Catholic priests, are you aware of the Ryan report into clerical abuse, published in Ireland last week? Perhaps you should google it before you claim any special privilage for Catholic priests. This began as a thread on mentalism without props and was then hijacked by people with religious axes to grind. There is a gospel magic section for them. That is where they should post those views. Tony.

To me, not using props is sawing one leg of the table youre working with.
all the greatest mass manipulators, through any sort of propaganda have understood the power that well managed, well understood, and well applied props carry along. for good or for bad... look through history. and litterature. |

A beautiful Psychic Stripper wouldn't really have a hard time reading the minds of the men in the audience as to what they're thinking when they see her show...

Haha See me in about a year. That's really a big goal ov mine. In my new performances I'll do a few Hypno-tricks. Those, ov course use nothing. AND I've been putting together mindreading routines that also use nothing. I've created a new routine I call Imperfection that's about a 5 minute routine that uses nothing and has really fooled a lot ov people in person and over the phone.
Stuff is out there. You just have to be obsessed like me. LOL Robert EC
