Hi,
I have $15, and tell me that should I buy the coin magic movie by Tony Hassini? Is it good? Or should I buy gimmicked tricks? WHich tricks? Bilal |

The answer to your questions are NO. The Tony Hassini tape is no good and it would serve you better to buy a copy of "Modern Coin Magic" than to go buy gimmicked tricks.

Try Michael Ammars beginning coin magic video. He gives all the basic moves and some good tricks.
Easy to learn from. sorry, I guess the video is more than 15 bucks, but not much more. save another 10 and get the vid. |

Depends upon the modality for learning that is best for you. Some people thrive on books, in which case Bobo's book is hard to beat. Others learn better visually in which case video is the best modality.
The question is never which is better, books or video, the question is how best do I learn? Is it easier for me to learn something I am shown or does a great explaination with some experimentation, trial and error work best for me? Then choose accordingly. Today a lot of education seems to lean towards the visual so most younger people prefer the video - it's what they know, while older folks prefer books, it's how they were raised in magic. A real life example is the difference in old instructions for putting together model cars and airplanes almost all text, compared to todays instructions for making things from legos, almost all pictures. Since you love magic, my bet is that one day you'll have both in your library, and answering this question for others. Good Luck!

READ THAT BOOK OF YOURS!!! It has a ton of stuff in it and you can learn a lot. I don't know why you are even thinking of buying gimmicked coin tricks and a Tony Hassini video when you have "Modern Coin Magic."

Hi,
MODERN COIN MAGIC is a good book. Very good coin book. Infact, the best coin book. I heard that there is another good one by David Roth? Is that true? WHat tricks are there? Is it good? And Tony Hassini does not have the BOOK, its his movie. He is the BEST MAGICAL TEACHER! I saw some reviews of his movie, and they were amazing. He put a coin in his hand, and the coin completely vanished. I have read MODERN COIN MAGIC. Completely. Now, im starting to do the moves. I just started from the classic palm (offcourse.) But I think my fav is The Gadabout Coins. Who likes it?! But the tricks in this book are GOOD, but it feels like they are getting OLD. They are old. I think NEW coin tricks are way better, Bilal. |

Bilal, Modern Coin Magic provides you with classic coin effects and the sleights you need to know to create coin magic. If you think that the effects and sleights in there are getting old then that is certainly not a good thing. Modern Coin Magic and its contents provides a solid foundation for coin magic and if you do not have a foundation you are not going to get anywhere. Learn the classics and master them. Learn the sleights and master them. Then you can get new things. New coin magic is good, but it is nothing without a foundation.
Until then... Andrew |

I think the effects in MCM are timeless. I mean they are really good and great reactions. They are basic but, simplicty is what makes most effects great.

Because coin magic is so visual, I admit that I like to learn it from video largely, but when studying some longer routines, I find it helpful to have an open book in front of me. Go figure. I hope I'm not gonna get flamed for saying anything that MIGHT be construed as negative about MCM, but I just wish it was more illustrated; a style of illustrations like in Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic would be a great improvement IMHO. |

Hi,
Thanks for the help. I have a coin classic palmed as I type this! But I have a question. It offcourse left a grey mark on my palm. ANd if I wash my hand, will my classic palm SKILLS go away? I hope not! Bilal |

Bilal,
Your classic palm skills will definitely not go away. That grey mark is probably from holding the coin for too long or too tight. This happens to me all the time. Its nothing really to worry about. Plus it will help to develop a callus on your palm that in the future will help your palm even more. -Bill |

Bobo is killer. You have all you would ever need to make a living doing coin magic with just that one book alone.
However, I would also recommend getting Ammar's Introduction to Coin Magic video. It's always better to see it being done, just to confirm that you are on the right track while you are learning the slights and routines from printed descriptions and illustrations. It's cheap, and covers a LOT of the basic slights and several routines from Bobo. This video is really good for the beginner and definitely gives you the most for your money. |

I would have to agree with most of the posts here. Bobo's book is excellent and you need not rush to expand your library. Many of the effects you will find in later coin magic books (like Kaufman's CoinMagic and Kaufman/Roths's Expert Coin Magic) build on sleights and routines in Bobo. They are excellent books, but they require that you have the solid foundation you will get working through Modern Coin Magic. After ten years of studying and performing coin magic, I still return to Bobo for inspiration.
Videos and DVDs are great supplements and provide you with the visual feedback you need and often clarify things that you may be difficult to decipher from text. I also recommend finding a mentor or friend who shares your interest and working with them (try the local IBM Ring if you don't know any other magicians.) I personally recommned David Roth's materials after Bobo. When you feel comfortable with Roth's work you will probably know where to go from there! |

Brad Burt's video series is excellent also.

I think what people are trying to say here, but in a nice way, is that you need to crawl before you walk, and walk before you run.
The learning process is often difficult. I still get frustrated with myself when I can't learn a new sleight or move. I remember being a young magician and wanting to amaze people in the first week or so of a routine. Now that I'm older, I realize that taking the baby steps gave me a good foundation and I was able to build routines from there. Still to this day, I will not perform a routine in public till I've done it a few HUNDRED times in private. Learning and being patient with yourself is painful. But you will be thankful down the road. |

Hey, I bought New Modern Coin Magic and then David Roth's Expert Coin Magic Videos 1-2 to start. This gave me an excellent foundation, as I could really read about the moves and then watch a master perform them. I haven only been into coins for a little bit, but I haven't used gaffs yet. I'm waiting to get some basic technique down first. Good luck
