Great! Thanks a lot guys! Now you've got me doubting myself... Am I successful because I perform an amazing, entertaining show? Or is it just my unbelieveably striking handsome looks and godlike physique? Thanks for nothing! Being nearly physically perfect is often as much a curse as a blessing... Scott ****************************************************************************** Scott, Judging from those massive arms...I gotta go with the god-like physique! Respectfully, Rochaz

People would flock to a concert of hers right now, simply because she was on tv. But in half a year or so nobody will remember her. I think she's brave has hell.

Rochaz, some would say Ricky Jay is successful because of his god-like physique.

It shouldn't be that way (actually looks should matter very little for any gender) but women are unfortunately judged more on their looks than men are. And this also mainly applies to the type of artist that the TV talent shows are trying to create: touring superstars rather than talented and successful though lesser known performers. |

Fortunately the academic world, while full of politics, is not an area where good looks are more important than talent (...usually). I think she can have a good career as a recording artist. I don't think she will have a good career if she actually has to tour and perform, and not just because of her bad looks. As Ricky and others have pointed out her big thing was that she was a surprise. We had low expectations of her and she surprised us. After the novelty wears off she is just a rather plain looking (I'm being nice now!) good singer. There are tons of good singers out there who never make it big, as they say. Go to any college theater department and you will probably find a few pretty good singers. Maybe there will be some amazing singers there, maybe there won't but there will surely be a few good ones. Some of them might even be drop dead gorgeous. Why won't they surely make it big? Because becoming a star is not entirely based on talent. Look at a lot of the big touring shows now. They aren't just singing; they are extravagant shows. The performers generally have such a stage presence and energy level that they can keep a stadium electrified for hours. How many of you would really be able to sit there and listen to Susan Boyle sing for that long? She has a nice voice, but very little stage presence. After the novelty wears off you are just watching something you could have went to any local musical show and seen. I don't get why people seem to be so offended by the idea that she doesn't have what it takes to be a superstar. We don't seem to have any problems accepting that the best technicians in magic don't always have the performance chops to become the next magic superstar...so why is this different? |

Mr Miller:
did not check the individual biography, if one exists, all that was necessary was to hear her say it. I find it intriguing how frequently in those discussions there is an appeal to authority. Or comments on how clever one is, rather revealing. james1a |

If by appeal to authority you mean her own words then yes...yes I do. If she later retracted that statement or said it was a joke I dunno since I didn't feel the need to follow her "career". Either way, whether or not she has ever been kissed was not at all a point of discussion here until you, for some reason, brought it up.

I think Ricky Jay should have played the part of Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights, rather than playing the camera guy.

Mr Miller:
Let me repeat, whether she took it back or not I have no knowledge, that this little joke was perceived as factual is to me a revelation. As to whether this was being discussed or nor you have not been paying attention. Where do you think all the comments on her virginity originated. As to authority I was not commenting on her joke, or her as the source of the joke, but your own haste in informing us you are a PHD candidate, which I don't beleive anyone was discussing either. please go ahead and have the last word. james1a |

Well you took it upon yourself to call me slow. I usually don't get baited but I can't stand when people call me stupid/slow/whatever. I never even mentioned the part about her never being kissed except while quoting someone else. It isn't relevant to the fact that she has little to no stage presence and god-awful looks. You can argue all you want. She will likely have a decent career as a singer but don't expect her to have successful tours or platinum albums. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to have the last word. This thread has become extremely important to me and I don't think I will be able to live my life the same if I'm not able to win this argument. Much appreciated!
