Do you have a constant approach to giving, or not giving, to other performers hats, or does it depend? Mostly, I don't put in to other performers' hats, just as they don't put in to mine.
But it depends, also, on whether I gain something personal from the performer. For example, when I'm getting to know about a particular pitch if a performer I approach and discuss the matter then shares information with me about the town/pitch/crowd, then I give him/her a donation. Today in the strand I was busking in, I moved oout of light rain to under a shop verandah [shelter at the front of the shop], and soon realized I had reset up rather close to a fellow sitting on the pavement with a sign and a hat or something at his feet. I offered to move if I was too close, but he said it was o.k. about me being where I was. I never put anything in his hat, partly because I was busy performing. Later I mentioned this fellow to a busking guitarist performing in the area and she told me his sign read "Spare Change". She said she reports him to the Security folk. In New Zealand, where I live, begging on the streets is not allowed. I did notice someone handing him a bill, so in one donation he got more than twice what most people individually put in my hat today.
The presentation makes the magic.

I don't tip other performers when I'm working. However, when I'm out with my family, then you betcha I tip!

If I am performing then no because like Chad I am working. However if I am done and all packed up and another performer is nearby and I like what he/she is doing then yes I do tip.
Normally if another magician tips me I make it a point to go see that magician and tip back. But that is just me. |

It depends. When I worked at the Renaissance Festival, there were a lot of musical groups that were allowed to leave a hat down, but were not allowed to solicit tips actively. However, they were allowed to sell CD's.
If I happened to be by their stand, and the crowd was watching, but not tipping, I would wait until there was a break in the show, and I would ask the crowd if they liked the music. Then I would ask them if they could play any of those instruments. At that point, I passed the hat for them. I also pointed out the CD's. The groups appreciated it immensely.

If I know a performer and we get along well, I will "seed" their hat. Make a very conspicuous contribution to get things rolling for them (Especially at the ren faires).
I have had the same done for me and it can help. Gwyd |

I only will tip if it is a good act. Entertainment=money. I won't support hacks or crap acts. It only encourages crap. I've thrown pennies at loser acts to discourage them from taking space from potentially good acts.

I tip anytime I can if they have talent whether I'm working or not.
I do not tip people that spray-paint themselves silver and stand like a statue.

I ALWASE tip the first performer I see. wether I am working or not. If this counts as seeding the hat all the better.
being a busker and not tipping is the sure fire way to anger the god of the pitch. make the god of the pitch happy and you do well, anger him and it will rain, and just when you need the hat.

If I'm not working, I'll tip the performer, or better yet if the person is just starting the set, and needs an audience I'll stand there and be that (sometimes difficult to get) first person to stop and help build his crowd.
Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That'll teach you to keep your mouth shut.

If you were a restaurant owner but had lunch in a restaurant you did not own, why would you not be willing to pay for your lunch you enjoyed at another's restaurant?
And the difference is? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I am not sure I understand where your coming from Bob. I shared a pitch with Chad and one other guy this weekend. There were a couple of balloon guys around too. We were near a few restaurants and stores so the employees would watch our shows when they were taking breaks.
I personally don't expect any of them to tip me and I didn't tip anyone. I don't stand in someone elses crowd and seed the hat because I look too much like a performer and if someone comes by later and sees me perform they will think (know) I was seeding the hat. My personal view (though I can and often am wrong) is that folks might feel taken by these actions. So many people already feel that a street show is about a breath away from a con job (again, my opinion). If I go into any of the resturants near by I will certainly tip the wait staff even if they have watch my shows to the point they know my lines. If I am not dressed to work I will certain tip good performers like Chad. Again, I may just be missing your point. I am often afraid to post and disagree because it often comes across as, or is taken as rude when I have not intended to be. There is where I see the differences. Faulkner |

Faulkner,
Please don't think you are rude. I don't! I'm not sure we disagree! LOL It is a matter of performing space. If I am watching their act in their time and space, that make me audience. I do buy tickets to other peoples' shows (of course, I am also given tickets to many). But there is no question that I am either part of the show or audience. We expect the audience to pay. The cotton candy guy does often buy pizza from the pizza guy. Why not? It should not be taken as a con. I do agree that you also don't want it to be seen as a con either. If you are sharing the space, as it appears you are, to the world, there is only one show and you are in it. I can see your concern. That is something I would avoid or make it a variety show with different acts in the same show. It is not rare in a night club show for the "off duty" entertainers to go out into the audience and help the crowd recognize when to clap and when to laugh. That is different from asking for money. Where do we disagree? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- I was dealing with financially supporting someone else's show as opposed to paying to see part of my own show. Being in the show (as far as the audience is concerned) does make the act questionable. |

Bob,
Gotcha...I also believe in "friends pay to see friends". When I played music for a living I had "poor" friends wanting tickets to the show. Couldn't pay the cover but could slam down more than a few beers after they got in for free. I see where you are coming from. Sometimes I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Faulkner |

I agree with some of the other folks here in that if I'm not actively performing, and I get time to sit and watch a show, I usually tip because in most cases, they tip me as well.
In fact, with one musical act in particular, we have a joke amongst ourselves where we constantly pass a dollar back and forth between each other at various Ren Faires throughout the year. |
