Does anyone know if Robert Harbin's Invisible Man illusion is described/explained anywhere besides The Magic of Robert Harbin? I'm interested in performing this illusion, but the book is rare and expensive. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

PM Ray Pierce. He used to perform it.

I believe one of Osborne's plans have fade-in, fade-out cabinets. I believe it is his transpostion illusion. Wlcox also issued planes MANY years ago and they had an Atomic Centrifuge, which was a fade-out/in vanish and reappear. It was advertised in Genii. (These plans were awesome!)

You might also check out my "Fade In-Fade Out" from The Wizards' Journal #3. I got rid of the box a long time ago as unnecessary to the effect, but it's pretty much the same idea using a different modus operandi, and if you really have to have a big heavy cabinet to lug around, you can always put it back in.

Hey Blair,
I emailed you a couple of months ago regarding Harbin's Invisible Man (as you seem to be knowledgeable about the effect) but never heard back. Just trying to get a basic description of the effect, as I'm previously unfamiliar with it (at least, by name).
It's all in the reflexes.

Yes, I built one and spent a lot of time making it work. It's an amazing piece but the weird party is the further you are away, the less impressive it is. The most amazed observers were the guys backstage I let stand about 1 foot away from it when I tested it!

So Ray,
You saying that this isn't a piece that should be built as people would be "less" impressed the further they were away? Robert |

Well... it is big and heavy but it's an amazing effect... it just has a limited viewing angle (45 degrees)and it is MUCH cooler up close than on a large stage. Now keep in mind I've toured with it and done it in a lot of large venues, but when someone sees it up close, it is just a LOT more impressive.

Ok! Thanks for that bit! I have always thought it would be a great bit to do regardless the angle!

Years ago we rented a fade-in, fade-out from Owen for a heavy metal band we were promoting at the Roxy in Los Angeles. We faded out the lead singer and faded in a beauty from the audience. It worked great, but the singer was really ticked that we turned him into a girl. The prop was positioned stage left at the very edge of the stage. The dance floor was approximately 40 to 50 feet to the seating area and then another 25 feet to the wall. From the feedback, everyone could see the transformation without any difficulty.
Do not go where the path may lead, but go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Still hoping for a clear description of this effect from someone; what the apparatus looks like, how the effect proceeds, etc.
It's all in the reflexes.

It's in the Harbin Book. Especially if you're looking to build one, that is step one.

Jim Steinmeyer created a version of this effect for the off-Broadway show "The Invisible Man". It can be as wide and tall as necessary and has no center post. He designed a version for Larry Wilsons' "Wonderland" which I built. An audience member placed in the cabinet visibly turns invisible with no knowledge of what has happened to them.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to avoid buying the Harbin book because it is $1,700 on Ebay. The only Osborne plan I could find was the Laser Flyto (http://hamiltonholtinc.stores.yahoo.net/laserflyto.html). I'm assuming that's what Blair's referring to. Blair, do you know where I might be able to get Wilcox's Atomic Centrifuge plans?
Ray, I attended a pyrotechnics lecture of yours many years ago at the Magic Castle. You are very knowledgeable on all theatrical aspects, and I would love any further input you might have. Spellbinder, I will check out your plans. I built the light platform illusion that you suggested a few years back. I built it from Baltic Birch instead of PVC, and it's the largest, heaviest prop in my show. My crew hates it, but it sells tickets to my shows when I promote that I will turn your principal into a bunny. The problem with the boxless illusions are that they require more intricate staging, so you trade a large box for a stage with a traveler curtain, wings, etc (which many schools don't have). |

You might be able to build it from aluminum to cut down on a lot of weight.
If I remember effect of the the Harbin illusion correctly, a lady from the audience is brought on stage and placed in the cabinet. In a mirror, she sees herself slowly turn transparent and then reappear (as does the audience). The lady exits the box and the magician's assistant the gets into the box, turns transparent, but does not "reappear".
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Lol... thanks Blair, I thought it was just me! I mean Chuck is a great friend but the relevance escaped me.
