A question to all you experienced illusionists out there...What are some good illusions oen could aquire for the sole purpose of making Laymen appear. In my opinion, a VIP appearance prop should expose as little magic as possible to the individual and should need minimal rehearsal, Better if none at all. Illusions like the FLash appearance come to mind, using the Black A** techniques, but in this new age of magic... there must be something better. One good example I can think of is Motobox... honestly...its a freggin cool illusion...But the concern is size... So my dear seasoned pros...What are your experiences?

Sometimes I use a Tip-Over Trunk. Other times I use the Bryce Screens. The tip-over takes less rehearsal. But you can teach someone the Bryce screens fairly quickly.

Double tip over trunk is the easiest hoever you do need to make sure the person you are producing is of good health and can handle being hunched over or kneeling down for a few minutes.
however that being said I still liek the trunk as it is easy and requires very little practice on the VIP's part. modern cabinet is the other option but either will do. sam

If the person is small you could try Scott Emo's Sacred:

I've used that one before but I'm thinking of getting a Bryce Screen. I'm waiting to see what how good Creative Magic's deals are going to be on June 24th.

The controversery here is what a VIP is willing to do.
Some will not consent to being made to hunch over or otherwise be bent, twisted or folded to fit into an illusion. Some will not make themselves available for rehearsal or take to following instructions or orders. In this light, there may not be a good "one size fits all" illusion. What you need is something that will not muss their suits or require much thought on their part. In this light, there is an illusion put out by JC Sum that only requires the VIP to stand still and it can be done totally surrounded. It is wheeled onto the stage or dance floor loaded and the production is made. No rehearsal is needed and the VIP can walk straight into the illusion just a few moments prior to their appearance. |

You're not going to believe this, but I still often use the Blanket Wrap from the Mark Wilson course. It's very portable, easy to learn and WORKS!

COOL!! If the VIP just needs to stand up, a flash appearance would be good too right?
About the stack of boxes...i'm not in favor of exposing bases to laymen |

Flash appearance would be good too as long as you have insurance that covers pyrotechnics and the venue also allows them.
Here in Canada, I would think that any magician using pyro whether it is as simple as using flash paper, or lighting an appearing candle, is doing so illegally. Getting insurance coverage here to use any open flame is extremely difficult or expensive and performing pyro in certain public venues such as bars and banquet halls can be against the law without special permits and certification. For one performance of a Seance show a couple of years ago, I wanted to light a simple wax candle for atmosphere. I had to get special permission from my performance liability insurance carrier and they placed a number of strict restrictions on when, how and where I could light a single candle for one time only. Just to hijack the thread for a brief second. The same goes with animals used in an act. Insurance for magicians here often restricts the use of animals to doves and rabbits only. And, no one other than the magician and their assistant is to be able to physically touch any of the animals. If the magicians are allowing children to pet their rabbits after a show, again, it is probably in violation of their insurance coverage (if they have any at all). Sorry to rant there, and now back to the original topic and making a VIP appear. |

The best are still: double tip over box, protean cabinet (modern cabinet) or Bryce screen (especially if you build a platform with wheels so you can drive it on stage from the wings and spin it around)
Backstage is another good one or the strip tease cabinet. These will work anywhere and aren't hard to learn. The flash appearance needs a dark backdrop, special lightning & pyro and can't be performed surrounded ! Illusions like the fire cage, stack of boxes, crystal box are not recommended for VIP's! |

Agreed... Lay people should not be exposed to magic's inner secrets...

Creative Magic's Cube Squared is very easy to teach and can be done surrounded.

I agree on Cube squared...But I've always wondered... how magical is it to the audience??

I've always received great responses from the audience, but you need to take your time in "proving" the squares to be empty; and you need a good motivation for your actions.

I use the Cube Squared from Creative magic for Santa or VIP, and it's works good. But there is method more spectacular. I have a subtrunk/ tip over which is a bit better but need more practice by the VIP. But Cube squared pack so so small. When you don't have extra space in your van (because of all your big props ans toys, he he he), you can travel the Cube squared in the little bag supplied. This is a point important.
Cube squared can be done surrounded, but people behind or even with a bad place will not see the clear view and the effect. For 360° total, better a Smoke chamber or effect with a plexiglass box. |
