According to an article from the Herald, Keith Barry says: There has never been a really good female magician.

Apparently Mr. Barry never heard of June Merlin, wife of Billy McComb. (With respect to the article as Mr. Barry is referencing magiciennes from Ireland.)

My first thought was Lisa Menna. Tremendously entertaining closeup magic!

The qualifier is "good" female magician which means it's all his opinion. I think there hae been quite a few that are good but then again, our opinions are what seperates us.

Tina Lennart is arguably not only one of the best female magicians, but one of the best magicians period!. Plus, her CD's are fabulous. Beautiful harp work. The person that wrote the article is obviously lacking in gray matter.

There has never been a FAMOUS female magician in the league of a Henning, Copperfield, Blaine, Daniels etc. Is that what he was getting at?

Read the whole article especially his response to this.
He was misquoted.

This is sad and disappointing.
The quote here is a partial quote and taken out of context for what appears to be sensationalism. A proud father makes a comment about his daughter and the state of magic in Ireland (which may or may not be correct) and has it twisted like this? Congratulations Dodd, 464 hits on this thread and counting, the only cost was a man’s reputation in the community. Tony Iacoviello |

It is also good to note that we updated the story on the same day that it was posted with Keith's response and statement that it was out of context.. so .. yes.. read the whole story. Compare that to other magic sites which only reported the original newspaper story and never updated with Barry's response. In addition, I thought it a good way to bring up the topic of female magicians which never seem to get the level of attention and respect that they deserve. |

This is the same Keith Barry who said magicians everywhere should stop performing
the linking rings since the public 'know that one' This was on a chat show. Pity he has never seen Chris Capehart..Cellini..Jeff McBride..Richard Ross..etc.

History is filled with women secretly performing as men, or being the 'true' genious in mathematics, writing and painting -- even military campaigns. So, who is to say that some on the famous performers of old (18-19th century) were not, in fact, female!
The real 'magic' will occur when we see a write up of a performance that focuses on skill and presentation, and the gender of the performer is not even mentioned.
