Do any of you use a Lotta Bowl. What do you like and where can I get one?

I use my small Lotta Bowl for paid shows. If you plan to do several shows a day on the street, I would not recommend it. The multiple refills will take a lot out your time.
Here is a jumbo one: http://magic.ziggos.com/jumbo-lotta-bowl-p-729.html There is a smaller one with the same shape. There are also other brands with different shapes. |

They are shaped the way they are keep the multiple refills occurring. I think the question should be "why they put 'bowl' in the name?"

If you pour the water into a large pot or cannister, you can refill the lota in a matter of minutes.

I found this thread while researching LOTA BOWLS on Bing. I would have left it buried but thought the information might be interesting to someone.
Curtis & Dynamike, magic Lotas are, or were originally, based on early water vessels from the Middle East. These were usually small round clay or metal "bowls" used for holding water for household use. Many had a shape similar to our traditional western cuspidor or spittoon. Once adapted to magic, Magicians seem to have expanded the name to mean any vessel that will apparently pour out its entire contents multiple times.

This a great book by Sam Sharpe that discusses Lotta Bowls, Vases and most all magic vessels relating to water magic. Great information on all things liquid: CONJURER'S HYDRAULIC and PNEUMATIC SECRETS

I have been thinking about getting one custom made in a bowl shape because ideas have just been popping up left and right. Besides, if you design it correctly, there is no reason a bowl-shaped Lota could not work. Side note: While it is not exactly the same thing, The Waters of India from Tom Mullica could also be an 'impromptu Lota bowl' if you need. It follows the same basic plot as a classic Lota Bowl. |

My lota is in the shape of a wide mouth vase and when I put plastic flowers in it that don't WANT water, the running gag begins.....
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

I am working on a little routine that uses the bowl in a story about a young knight and a magic vase lent to him by an old woman that lives in a cave near the village. The old woman is based on an English folktale of Mother Ludlam that it was told used to lend pots and utensils to the local villagers.

MagiChrisMitch, Thanks for the reference. I will research it further. I have a Lota Vase that is copper and brass that has 3 1/2" diameter tubes soldered in the neck. The tubes are about 6" long and sealed at the bottom. I have no idea why they are there. My first guess was for color change/think a drink type trick but there are much easier ways to accomplish this. Anybody have any ideas?

There are many ways to view and use a Lota bowl. The most popular and long running I know is as Socar and Socar Jr. (from India) use it in the waters of the Ganges running gag between major segments. The bowl sits unassumingly on stage all them time. The performer walks over to it (after an opening segment, perhaps) and announces "The waters of the Ganges" pours the bowl "empty" places it back in view and continmues to the next segment. Then after a trick or segment following -- he walks over a number of times, announces "Waters of the Ganges"pours to empty the bowl and then continues the show. No further explanation etc.needed.
I developed a different approach using a fable I discovered on the net -- the story of a water carrier, with two pots, one of which was cracked and would leak water on the side of the road...therefore watering flowers that would not have grown otherwise. Fr. Daniel Roland, (Magic of Father Daniel) uses his lota redressed as a clay pot and handled by an assistant, to retell the story of the women at the well found in the Christian New Testament. As with most things magical, remember prop is only a starting point for a routine which highlights your take on this world and the magic that surrounds the life upon it -- and may be the center of the routine, a small part of the equation -- or a throw-away gag of wonder that stands alone.

(812-633-7875, http://www.ninedragonpottery.com) does lovely custom designed work on various Lota Bowl/Vases. He hand produces one-of-a-kind Lota Bowls that are not only very magical and whimsical in nature, but allow for about a dozen “pours” issuing from a deceptively small and well shaped vessel. If you’re in the U.K. Martin Duffy makes a wonderful Lota as well, I believe his are now sold through Martin Breese’s Abracadabra shop. Magically, Walt |

Autumn Morning Star (here on The Magic Café) has done one of the neatest things with aluminum props. In this photo she is performing Rice bowls but to your left you can see her huge Lotta sitting on a separate table. She has refinished these to look like pottery to fit her Native American show. Fantastic! You have got to see it for yourself.

Many, many years ago master mentalist the Amazing Kreskin actually did a great routine with the Lota bowl on his weekly TV show (late 1970's early 80's?). It was taped in Toronto for International release. It was actually a very good routine.
He got two people up to inspect the bowl - they held the empty bowl in their hands while it was covered with a piece of cardboard - he had them concentrate (during which they claimed the bowl grew colder) and when the card was removed it had water inside. This was repeated a few times and in the end the water that was poured back into the bowl was greater than the size of the bowl itself (was overflowing). It was actually one of the best routines with a Lota I ever saw. MM |

Just curious...is it pronounced "LOTTA" or "LOW-TA?"
I've been thinking about getting one as a running gag, I like the idea of pouring the water back into the bowl so it overflows, pretty visual. It also goes good with a Foo Can, I think. |
