Ok I'm trying to get into I.B.M. and I guess everyone has to give a demonstration/performance and my problem is what do I perform? Do they have you do stage/close up? I'm thinking of doing a handcuff escape but I'm going to need a few other tricks. I was thinking of the floating match/cosmosis, crazy handcuffs and enchanted cube. I'm also thinking of doing mugged. Has anyone ever seen dancing butterflies performed?

I would recomend that you show them what you do the best even if it is only a trick or two.
Don't worry if they are old effects. You are not there performing to impress them but to demostrate that you love magic. Mago Mai

Mago Mai has it exactly right: You are there to show the group that you love magic.
Magic clubs have all sorts of skill levels, from seasoned pros to total beginners and just about every level in between. So don't worry about what you do; pick about two effects that you are confident with and do those. You'll be just fine. |

Peter is right,
Don't sweat what you are doing, just do it as best as you can. Most magic club members will just sit there politely and applaud no matter what you do anyway, so I predict right now that you will be accepted as a new member and will do wonderfully at your audition. PSIncerely Yours, Paul Alberstat |

I joined the IBM last year and did my very favorite effect, the Cups & Balls. Other people demonstrated money tricks, card tricks, and one did a great childrens show change bag routine. You will find that the Magic club is a very sympathetic audience and they are rooting for you. Do your very favorite effect or two and have a blast.
Congratulations, you won't regret joining the IBM. Mike

Hi,
I agree with the others when they say just relax and go for it. Some clubs like mine required you perform three effects, so worth checking out beforehand what is required. I personally think clubs are awesome giving everyone an opportunity to net work and share a love of magic. Don't worry so much about what effects you do as long as you feel you can perform them well. Makes me kinda chuckle as I remember one of my three effects was the coloring book! ha ha! Dancing butterflies is a beautiful effect, I have it myself. Good luck To You! |

Sorry, I don't know anything about IBM. I'm a Mac person.
"Sure, I do Scotch and Soda in every show. What? You mean there's a trick by that name?"

I suggest you do from 3 to 5 effects if you plan to use patter. Keep it simple, don't go into complicated sleights for your introduction as you'll eventually turn pretty nervous when confronted with an audience of magicians.
I also suggest to keep it varied. Don't do 5 card tricks, or 5 coin tricks. Good Luck! |

Don't worry at all, this is the dream crowd that you always wanted to perform for. They are in your corner, and want to see you succeed.
Start worrying when you hit the streets and meet the real spectators...Thats when, how did Ceaser say it -- The lions seem hungry.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

If you have visited the ring you might talk to an officer or someone who seems active in the magic demonstrations.
I remember my first routine I shared with Ring 129 was the torn and restored cigarette paper. Hopefully I will see some of your IBM ringers in Kansas City on July 1-5, 2003, for the International Convention. Harris
