Is Vernon the Tupac of magic? He seems to release more stuff since he passed away! I have at least one copy of all of these, so I'll be passing, but it does look like a cool offering.

This is a great offering for a number of reasons. Even if you have the books, you're getting some extra, unpublished material. For collectors, this is a must have, especially the Deluxe version and finally, for those that do not have the material, here's your chance to get it all in one volume. The Symphony of the Rings has been a staple in my act for almost 30 years. It's worth the money just for that.

It's a great value if you don't already own these books I think though, I would prefer reading the individual books to this massive tome.

I can see your point, however I think some will appreciate the convenience of having everything in one place. I owned all of the Paul Harris books previous to the Astonishment books coming out and while I have a nostalgia for those old books, I never look at them anymore and keep going back to the Astonishment books.

Buy and study everything about Vernon including The Vernon Touch from Genii. I think this new offering from Lou is a must have for card workers especially.

Mine is ordered. I also own some of the works of Dai Vernon, but as Domino Magic mentionned: it's convenient to have everything in one place. However, I have no idea how convenient it will be reading a 1100 page book, or finding what you want to find. We already know the contents of this book is great so you can be sure to get more than your money's worth.
I'm looking forward to put this one on my bookshelf. I really don't think I will be reading it a lot, or even completely but I will page through it and I know I will always find something useful.

The work contained within the book is essential; the format is ridiculous.
Such a massive tome is unwieldy to actually use to learn from. I imagine there will be problems with the integrity of the binding. There is a large probability that the spine of the book will crack if the book is actually used. I could be wrong. Just my opinion from 3 decades of being a bookseller. |

I'm trying to remember and can't. Did Vernon live at the Castle or did the Larson's put him up in an apartment close by???

I have a well used copy of an early printing of Greater Magic. I bought it well used 20 ago from H&R Used Magic Books and have referenced it hundreds of times. The cover is faded, pages yellowed but the spine is holding together just fine. Do the modern binding methods suffer quality wise?? I don't know but curious. I think it has almost as many pages as the Vernon compendium.

I agree about the Paul Harris Astonishment books. And that's just the point, they were produced as three books. Not one. Also, his original books were completely redone. L&L has already published most of the Vernon books in a uniform design.
As far as the new Vernon book goes, it's an excellent buy if you don't currently own the books that make it up. I'm glad I already own most of the books, because I wouldn't want to deal with anything that massive. On another note. What about the "Vernon Chronicles"?

I'm glad that I got to meet him at the Castle and sit with him (Becky Blaney was with me and I think he was in love with Becky) before I got interested in all the printed material about him that flooded the market after he passed away. Coincidentally over the past few weeks I've been learning Vernon's handling of One Armed McDonald's Ace trick from the little green book by Lewis Ganson, the second in the card magic series. It's not a reprint. I guess we can all see a little bit of ourselves in Vernon. And I'm sure some aspects of his life were painful on a personal level. If you want to know Vernon get everything published. You can always read and study and then resell if you need to to get the next book. You owe it to yourself. -=tabman

Tabman,
I have the three magic volumes of the "Vernon Chronicles". I was just wondering why these works weren't included in the Essentials project. Craig

That's not necessarily terrible. But books with a large page count and glue bindings tend not to survive multiple readings very well and still stay in good shape. Especially if the book is being read flat on the table while open, as you would with a magic book (i.e. with cards or coins in hand ) |

Because I have most of the classic books in this massive book, I, too, will be passing up on this book. However, if anyone who does not have the Vernon Books included then they MUST buy this!!! Not only will you have EVERY essential knowledge of The Professor at your fingertips... This is the best buy hands-down!!!! I don't have any of the VERNON CHRONICLES, but plan on getting them... Wondering if L&L Publishing will bound all 4 of these Chronicle Books in 1 and calling it THE ESSENTIAL DAI VERNON--> VOLUME 2 ??? Should I wait for L&L to decide making this Second Volume or should I buy each of the 4 individual Vernon Chronicle books? .
You know how to make God laugh?........... Tell him your plans!!!

Smythe sewn case spine binding with cloth covers, rainbow end sheets, backed head & foot bands, spine & front cover in in gold foil, 100lb film laminated full color dustjacket. The highest quality book this printer makes. So, no fears of the spine splitting. As for the "massiveness" of the book, I'm sure most of us will manage. These books have already been released separately, which is why it's being released as a single volume. You're getting a quality book that will last you a lifetime and for those who don't have the previous books, you're getting a bargain! I mentioned above some reasons to purchase this book. Those reasons are valid for some and not for others, but one thing for sure is that L&L releases quality publications and anyone buying this will not have any regrets. |
