Hello all,
As I've been reading a lot on the Café lately, three questions came to my mind that I thought might be fair game to ask - a quick search did not yield any satisfactory results, so I don't feel bad for the new post. So the questions are: 1) How do you begin your show, your first interactions with the audience (video, introduction, etc)? 2) What is the first effect you do? 3) What is the last effect you do and close your show with? My answers: 1) I come out on stage with a western style toy gun that I point to the audience and get them concerned a bit and then, pointing the gun to the side of the stage, I pull the trigger and a flag comes out that says, BANG. I then say that "I like to start the show off with a bang." This was inspired by Maven's "Boo!" bit, which is quite humorous. (I used to start the show by going directly into "A Dangerous Opener," I loved the drama of it, by Jermay but I've grown tired of that bit for the moment.) 2) After my little gun stunt I do a paragraph long introduction and go into a slightly modified version of Kurtz's "Ultimate Chair Prediction Plus" - although I wish I could get my grubby little hands on Cavalli's OMICRON to see CHAIRVELOPES because I've heard great things about it. Then I do my formal introduction. 3) I end the show with a "massive" prediction where a good deal of the choices made throughout the show are actually shown to have been.... well... predicted. I frame this as a, "you thought we were just having random fun but really I was influencing you the whole time." The scripting of the show is vague enough at times to be passed off as "influencing" to fit the prediction. I do admit to being inspired by the exceptional work of Derren&Andy when I made this effect up by taking the idea of using the whole show to influence someone (the Something Wicked run) and also the idea of predicting choices made throughout the whole show (the Evening of Wonders run) and using those to create my own presentation and coming up with my own method (which, sadly is too convoluted for my own good) for the effect. It plays well, effect wise, but I know it can be better while not actually copying other people's work. My last thoughts on this are that I feel a lot of mentalists end their show with a prediction and I was wondering why other people thought that was. Much obliged, Edward Cutting |

As far as my ending goes, for me, I end on a prediction but I'm now going to start doing a variation of Bob Cassidy's eternaly your's. I love the idea of ending on a emotional level and I feel for me, this will work out great as it fits my style and personal prefrence. I've been searching for something like this for so long and just recently disscovered that it was right in front of me the whole time.

This is my half hour show.
http://jimclass.com/dejavue.htm It has changed considerably since the first perfromance. (Clip is at the bottom of the second page). But it is basicaly the same story and is based upon my life. (It was originaly only ten to fifteen minutes). The major change is that the audeance now also remembers being part of the dream. My closing line is I thank you all for taking part in the show again. -Jim H.o.A-X

I open to music, walk on and blow some flame. Then the music dies and I begin to speak:
Good evening ladies and gentlemen. My name is Tony and I am your ventriloquist for tonight... I talk a lot through my rear. I can also do some cool things with balloons. (I now go into a balloon swallowing routine, ending with the production of a mouth coil. It is very visual, and is funny.) Seriously, I am going to be doing something rather unusual this evening. I am going to open the doors of your mind and introduce you to the wild and wacky world of inner space. But before we go there, lets have a quick show of hands. How many people here believe in psychic powers? Good - I love a gullible audience. How many people don't believe in psychic powers? What are you doing here - did you get the tickets for free? How many of you haven't made your minds up yet? How many of you couldn't care less? To be honest I don't know whether I believe in psychic phenomenon or not. I don't know whether I have psychic powers or not. But I do know that I have a knack of being able to influence what people think, and what choices they will make. And I can sometimes even discern what they are thinking. Let me show you what I mean... This allows me to move into a bank night routine. This is my first real routine. It is not too impressive (one in five odds of getting it right) so it does not stretch credibility too early. And it gets people interested because of the high level of audience participation. My end effect is either a Q&A routine or a hypnosis routine (by that I do not necessarily mean a full hypnosis show - I sometimes do a ten minute fun routine based on the Dr Q routine in Ormond McGills encyclopedia.) An interesting topic - I hope others give the information you asked for. It would be fascinating to see the different approaches.

I open with an introduction - "My name is Chad Crews, and the name of the program you are about to see is called...etc..etc..."
Keep in mind my program is an educational show, so the intro, which is about 1 minute or so, tells them about the different topics we'll be discussing, then I start into the show. My first effect is one with Jumbo cards, it's an Aldo Columbini routine, which I'd have to look up to remember the name, it might be "Pick Me." I theme it differently but basically the volunteers both pick the only two cards with their message on it, all the other cards say something different. I close the show with a piece of flash paper being lit in my hand and it flaming up and disappearing. It gets an audible gasp, and, even though folks just saw the Losander floating table a minute before that, they always want to know if the flash was a real spirit...it's really strong and leaves you in an applause cue as well.
