I am thinking of experimenting with sticking rhinestones on acrylic rods or PVC tubes or metal tubes. The purpose is to make a wand for stage use so the glitter shows up well.
Which should I use so the rhinestones will stick well and not drop off easily? Acrylic rod? Acrylic tubes? PVC tube/pipe? Metal tube? What glue should I use so the stones can stick well as I will be using the wand frequently? Do I need to rough up the surface of the rod/tube/pipe? Your advice is appreciated. Thanks! |

I would rough the surface a bit with a small dremel tool. I don't know you are planning a specific pattern if so you could transfer the pattern to the tube. Rough it up and glue.
I will have to check on the glue. I think it was J-2000 or something like that. My wife did my daughter's show choir's costume with it. Strong stuff. Old "Turk's Wands" were made with acrylic tubing filled with glyercine and glitter and sealed. I know you can get clear and color acrylic rods depending on what look you are going for. You might even think about mounting the stones on a rod and then encasing the rod in clear tubing. Richard

Thanks, Richard, on the idea of mounting the stones on a rod and then encasing the rod in clear tubing. This defintely helps in preventing the stones from falling off due to excessive use.

Some modern plastic "gemstones" react badly to plastic glues and develop a fractured appearance. You might want to run a test on some of your rhinestones and just glue one or two to paper or cardboard to see if this happens to them. The ones that have shown the bad reaction have had flat silvered backs. Formerly, rhinestones were made of glass with conical backs and you could use most any glue with them.

I would think that any brand of polyurethane glue would work well and would not react with the rhinestones.

If you use the swarovski crystals used on costumes, they are made for this type of glue.

E-2000. I just could not remember the name. Do not use in an enclosed space or with open flames!

Thanks for all the info. The rhinestones that I have are the old ones where the back are conical in shape. Because of its shape I have to drill small hole first before gluing the stones. This means that there is less adhesion space with the stones. Will it still stick firmly?

Get a drill bit of the same diameter as the stones and have the tip ground down to the same cross-section as the backs of the stones. That way the fit will be perfect.

James, I took a course in using adhesives for artificial stone setting at a jewelers convention in NYC a few years ago, so here's some VERY helpful tips:
First, you need to countersink the setting so the gem will fit in snugly. You need to flash the material to remove any and all surface oils. On metals, flashing is done with the heat of a torch. For your situation acetone will work just fine. Do NOT use cyanoacrylates (super glues), the bond is WAY too strong and usually separates the "foil" backing of the gem. This means that not only will the gem appear dull, but the glass portion can pop off. The best recommended adhesive for gem setting is a good two part epoxy. Fill the countersunk hole a little less than half way with the epoxy. When the gem is pushed in, the glue will rise up around the pavillion cuts. When done properly, there should be no excess glue. More tips: Dip a thin wooden dowel in beeswax. Lightly press the waxy end onto the table facet of the stone (the table is the largest flat cut on the top). Now you can easily put the stone where you want it without getting fingers glued. Hope this helps, TGN BTW James, have some fresh durian for me.

If you don't mind investing a few bucks in some basic tools, you might consider a leather covering over what ever core you decide on. Tandy Leather makes synthetic gems in many diffrent sizes and colors. I know they don't have stores in your area, James but you can visit them at www.tandyleatherfactory.com and order that way.
A piece of tooling leather can be dyed any color you want and the stones are like rivets. If they're set correctly, they won't pop off. You could set the stones as need on the leather and then wrap it around the core.

Thanks, thegreatnippulini, for the valuable tips especially on the flashing, two-part glue and beeswax. And I will definitely think of you when I take some durians. LOL!
Thanks, Will, on your suggestion on using leather. I will play around with it too. Appreciate the tip. |

You should try ... not only durian fruit but also durian rice, durian candy and then follow up with durian drink. We have them all in Malaysia. I think your wife won't kiss you for at least a week.
