How do you determine what library theme to use?

Typically it is the state that determines the theme. A lot of states join on together and do the same theme.

I went to the public library website and didn't see any mention of a theme. Also went to the public school websites to there library section and no mention of a summer reading theme. Do you normally just call around to different libraries and ask theme?

Thanks.

What is your state?
Most libraries will have the one theme like Ken mentioned.
Here is a key: actually promote books and reading.
Beleive it or not, I have had comments this year like: "you actually promote reading and books, everyone says they do in their promo material"
Now I picked up on little comments from the pros like Ken and this has helped me tremendous. Call a library and ask the theme.

And you might want to ask about next years theme. Our states (Missouri and Kansas) can be found by doing a web search.)

I have a summer school elementary school show at the end of July. Theme is oceans and water...It will be an early test of my Make a Splash theme at your library program...

Row row row your boat....

On another note...I had about a week to develop a show to be shared later this morning..Theme...Frindle...(a great read about kids ..dictionaries and words...

Hi Mike,
As soon as the summers over, I would suggest calling some of the main libraries in the different systems in your area and asking to talk with the children's librarian or person who is responsible for planning the summer reading program. When you get them, just explain that what you do and that you'd like to get some info about what they do, what they are looking for, and when they make the decisions for the upcoming summer program. That way it is very low pressure, they feel comfortable talking with you and they will often ask you for your details which is a great time to give them your website and a little about what you do.

Then around the first part of January - send postcards and make phone calls and really try and book the dates for the upcoming summer.

Find out the deadline of each library...

I missed a system one year that has 29 branches because (for instance) their 2008 deadline was in June of 2007.

Thanks for the great info.

Another question- which libraries have themes, public or school or both? and are they both usually the same?

Thanks,
Mike

Public libraries have summer themes. School libraries are actually "media centers" and you would contact the media specialist, not a "librarian" during the school year.
