I agree with B Hackler, also Laflin's books, as well as "Spiritual Applications for Tarbell," which will be of help if you own vols. 1 and 2 of the Tarbell books. These lessons may or may not line up with your particular slant on presenting the gospel, but they will surely get your creative juices flowing.
Also, any information from Oz and Wilde, who are both contributors here, is GOLDEN. If you aren't a member of the FCM, I strongly suggest becoming a member, if for nothing else the privelege of subscribing to the "Christian Conjurer" and reading previous issues. Well worth the price of membership. Finally, Duane Laflin began a new conference called "Advance" which is devoted entirely to the gospel performer. Reasonable cost for attending, and a plethora of useful info for the seasoned and beginning gospel presenter. Sorry to go on and on, but the art of magic as it pertains to sharing the gospel is my "trigger" for life, and I hope it will be for you as well. Good luck! |

Hi Guys,
Yes, I'm already a member of FCM and am thinking about starting a local chapter. I also recently subscribed to Duane Laflin's generous offer of ADVANCE. I already have his three DVD's. The reason I was asking for sources of magic gospel routines is that I lead children's worship in our church and would like to try to make a commitment to myself to have a gospel illusion or object lesson during every worship service during the coming year, so was trying to find sources that I may not know about. That's at least 52 routines or object lessons, but the kids seem to really respond to the routines I have done for them in the past. Thanks.

You're probably not goint to like what I'm about to say...Ask God to give you a message for the effects that you have. We don't need parrots who go around repeating the same thing, we need men and women of God, who hear from God, who know the Lord and from their heart put a message to the effects that will be life changing.
If you know the Bible, then you've got the greatest resources for Gospel messages that you could possibly have. You all are killing me.... |

I was just about to say something similiar, but you've put it very well Terry. Some might not like it, but it's the truth. Something I learned 2 years ago, and relearned just recently.
It's not a bad thing to ask for gospel routines if one is looking for idea's, but it's more benificial to use the creative talents intrusted to us by God to be original. Terry, you've always been willing to share idea's, give suggestions, and provide support to others. I don't think anyone will misread what you mean. Hi Steve! You provide some very good resources. Some of those resources inspired me to use my creativeness more. Del Wilson's books were also an inspiration to me. I have all of his. What I liked most about his books is how straight forward he is in writing the routine and patter. It's kinda like plain toast, and it's up to the reader to put their choosing of spread on it.

I understand you are trying to encourage me to be original, not merely parrot other perfomers, and use God's word for guidance and inspiration. My goal here, however, is to do my best to do a gospel illusion or object lesson during children's worship for the coming year that hopefully will add to our lesson for that day. That's 52. I'm not that prolific in coming up with original effects.<g> But I think I see this touched on a lot here, and with good reason. But even an original effect *usually* starts out on an idea from another performer. Suppose someone comes up with a great routine using ABC Blocks. I think its very likely that performer has at least seen, read, or mimicked a routine by another performer first. Certainly, very few build their own ABC Blocks set. Sometimes that routine is just changed to fit the style of the subsequent performer. Sometimes that performer takes a little bit from several routines he has seen other performers use. And sometimes he is able to get a very unique idea, but it is almost always built on what he has learned from others. I'm working on my own original "larger" stage show now that I *think* I will call, "It's so much more fun when you know how it's done, and the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John." All the illusions started off routines I have seen or read about other people performing, but they have been changed, parts left out or added, and certainly adapted to fit my style and to fit in with the message of the show. It's an original show in my mind, but I certainly didn't invent the linking rings, or a particular newspaper tear, etc. Inspiration was given from other people I have seen perform and the message I felt lead to share. Thanks always for your contribution to this forum...you make it a richer place. -- Dean

A nice little FREE newsletter, but you have to take the intitiative to write and ask for it. As a coincidence, the lockfamilymagic site is down until October, which is, in part, what prompted me to ask the original question about sources of illusions.<g> -- Best Wishes, Dean

There is also a certain comfort level for each person. Terry, you are very polished and fun to watch because your patter flows so smooth.

If it were true, then Pastors need not go to seminary or college for that matter. The original poster was simply asking for some sample gospel routines to see. From there he was going to develop his own routine. (Maybe he wasn't, but it isn't up to us to always assume the worst.) There is great good to be had from watching well developed routines. Steve Spill's original Bill in Lemon has been changed into completely different routines by many different magician such as Doc Eason. All versions are great and extremely different. To watch an effective gospel routine can have the same effect. He can see why these people are effective at spreading the good word. To do research for his ministry could never be bad. I started by watching and getting mentored by Duane Laflin, however my entire persona and stage presence is at the very least a polar opposite to his. It's good to watch good people, no matter if you are a gospel magician, pastor, juggler, or secular performer. To the original poster, there have been many great people mentioned in this thread. Most of which use a variety of styles. This will give you a fantastic starting point for finding your niche in the world of gospel magic. Good luck!

I agree with the point Joey was making...and that we need to go to resources and find things. In our show (Oz and Wilde) we often will find an effect that we like...and will create a version of it for our show. However, we buy the effect first. Even if we don't use the props. We are giving what is due to the one who inspired us.
The collective library at our studio is around 800 books, 300 dvd/videos and more than 1000 magazines. We pull lots of inspiration from that. Take an idea, take a routine, and make it your own. By that I mean put your personality to it. Like Joey, we've studied under Duane Laflin...and do some of his effects in our show. But the performance is unique to us...though it originated with Duane. Where you want to be "original" is when you perform at say the FCM Convention. There you don't want to be doing some else's stuff...because they might be doing it. But when putting together a show for your church or community...be a vacuum of information. So while I see the wisdom in suggesting someone pray for inspiration...I also think one needs to do research as well. That's my take on this. And by the way...a lot of good resources have been shared. ><> J

After the original poster came back and mentioned it was a weekly thing that he was going to do, then I would whole heartedly support someone getting some resources for ideas, so my original comments are not aimed for someone who is having to come up with a new message week after week using magic.
But those of us who are going into different churches and ministering, my comments are still the same. I couldn't even begin to share what I really think, I might be tarred and feathered (that would make the oil prices really go up) But I know of which I speak having 29 years of experience in Gospel magic and 40 years in performing magic in general. I had enough material where I could go back to a church 4 years in a row and not repeat the same program (we were in a church for 5 nights) and I can honestly say that 99 percent of the material came from inspiration of God. Being a pastor I've found I'm not the only one that God speaks to about a certain subject. Many times when I've preached someone would tell me that was what someone else had preached that morning too. So while something was birthed in my mind and heart, that doesn't mean someone else hasn't had the same inspiration and the same message. (God does have an agenda) So God has a message that He wants communicated to His people and it's up to us to listen to what He has to say and then share it! |

Dean,
I agree with the many resources that are mentioned for inspiration and examples. I also agree that God can give you a lot of inspiration thru His Word and in observing and being aware of your everyday life situations. I used to do gospel magic lessons twice a month for a children's church group ranging in ages from 6-11. Each church and each children's group is different. So what may work for kids on the east coast, mid-west, the south, in rural areas, etc. may or may not work here in the L.A. area depending on culture. That is why I use the resources mostly as a foundational guide. What I did was get a composition book(s), write down the routines I did or ideas of routines, how I performed it, the scripture used, and what was the reaction. Also, I carry a small note pad with me to write down ideas during my everyday life. You'd be surprised what God can show you, a scripture that can inspire you, and from there perhaps associate an effect to illustrate that point. Another thing I did was list the effects I do well, effects I need to work on, and what I'd like to learn. By knowing what I can do on paper has even helped me better understand what kind of object lessons I can do and what I can plan to do in the future. Keep lists of what effects with what lessons might go together. My point is write down what comes to you whether a routine from a DVD, something from a book, scripture passage, whatever. Ask God for wisdom and guidance and He will help you come up with routines. Believe me, I'm not a creative guy. Yet, God has helped me to come up with routines and messages that are tailor-made for that specific children's group. By continually reading what I've written over the weeks and months, other ideas started coming to mind. This is what helped me. The DVD's, books, routines, etc. helped me with a performing and gospel presentation foundation. God's Word and His Holy Spirit helped me to create and carry it through. One other thing, sometimes the object lesson doesn't have to be a magical effect, but perhaps just have wonder. Sometimes just having an interesting object with a story is just as "magical" and/or captivating with children to bring forth a spiritual truth. I hope that helps. G |
