So, recently I've been getting bookings to eat fire at luau parties... But being the 125lb pasty white guy that I am, I can't see myself wearing the loincloth costume that most luau fire eaters wear. So I put the question out there: what should I wear at a luau that won't turn me into a comedy act? I've been going with all black so far, but this deters people (even dispite my argument that "it makes the fire look better!") I've been thinking maybe a simple hawaiian shirt and pants. So what do you think?

I think a Hawaiian shirt and board shorts.
Or a mumu

Don Ho...thats what I would shoot for...a stateside Don Ho....
You come to a point in your life when you really don't care what people think about you, you just care what you think about yourself.

I never understood why those fire dancers would wear grass skirts with fire.
Gives me the willies.

Maybe I should make a faux-grass skirt out of kevlar.

Just one question Brett......... is this an "its itchy" not mixing .... or a ...... when you see a hottie ..... its all TOO obvious? Well ..... at least in a grass skirt - if you have one too many beers you don’t need to worry about "zip trap" |

If you are obsessed with sticking to just black despite the different venue and not listening to people who are paying you, then how about a black vest with no shirt?
I would get some shorts that go over your knee. And look at the ones with tropical themes. Many national department stores carry them for Summer. Goodwill and Salvation Army stores are good for Hawaiian shirts. As with any costume choice. Safety first. I'm forever reading the tiny labels in clothes and putting back something I though was perfect. Michael |

Thanks Michael,
Shorts and a vest, noted; and a hawaiian shirt maybe. I'm ready to go to K-mart! I'm new to these luaus; but I'm certain if I can dress Hawaiian, then I'll book more gigs. I've had two potential clients back out when I explained my normal costume to them, so its time for a change. Thanks for the advice, |
