If you like that effect and would like to learn more about it than I recommend you Silken Dreams DVD by JAY SCOTT Berry.
http://www.hocus-pocus.com/magicshop/inc......tem=7829 The Diamond Fountain: A classic silk effect made even more amazing! From empty hands, a large scarf appears. Effortlessly, a rainbow fountain of silks materializes and cascades downwards. Finally, a bottle appears, full of liquid. |

Jay is a real smooth consumate performer. I had the pleasure of seeing him lecture a little over a year ago and enjoyed every minute of it.

Hi,
What is the difference between Jay Berry and Duane Laflin? Does anybody now? They both work with silk. Hope to hear from somebody. my best, Ronald |

In a word, Jay just makes everything look "magical". It's sort of like "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it". His Symphony on Ring and Ribbon, still my favorite routine of his, is absolutely beautiful.

Thanx Clinton,
And what about learning the basics? I have already ordered Jay Scot Berry Silken Dreams (not yet received) and hope to learn the movements that makes magic. I sam his silk fountain and the moves where indeed really magical. I was WOW! Laflin has lot of dvd's with a palmo, dye tube and hank. Or is it so that they both are good in learning the basics and for that it doesn't matter wicht one you should have? |

Hi Ronald,
If you haven't already discovered the production that Jay uses, check out his Eclipse Tips. It is a modified . . . tip that allows this type of production. Jay is one of my favorite close up performers, and an all around nice guy. I highly recommend seeing his lecture . . . outstanding. Dan

Hi Dan,
Thanks for sharing. I've seen the products from Jay and I have his dvd wich he explain some really simple but great props and handelings for silkmagic. The Eclipse iam not familair with but worth a try to look into it, thank you. I feel Jay makes silk magic really magical. He inspires me to get more out the use of silk in a couple of my routines. A question to you Dan, how will you compare Jay and Duane Laflin. I have a lecture note from Duan but I was a little bit dissapointed. I have doubts about the palmo and instruction dvd. Looking foreword to your reaction. my best, Ronald |

The palmo is the best hand dye tube on the market. Laflin's explaination is superior. Get it, you will not be disappointed. That is, if you like to practice. Dye Tubes are not self working, they are only the tool to your greatness. They cannot make you great.
The difference in the tricks are in the silks, Jay Scott Berry uses his Diamond Shape silks for all his effects. These must be used as this assist in how he manipulates the equipment. Laflin uses full square silks from China, his methods are more on the classic handlings of the props. Any silks can be used with the Laflin workings. Making a statment with an explaination is confusing, what did you not like that you discovered in the Laflin notes. That you would have to pre-set a trick? It is not REAL magic? That you had to practice? It was not self working? That they were just notes? Lecture notes many times are just that, they are to help you remember the lecture. They are detailed explainations of the lecture. You have to attend to get the reminders to jog your memory. Some lecture performers do give detailed explainations in there notes. Although, that is not the norm. |

Duane has a series of DVDS dealing with Silk Magic. I own all of them. They are great for learning how to do silk magic. And as I stated before, JSB is just one of those performers that make everything look like real honest to goodness magic.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.

One of the first silk effects I ever purchased was Jay's silk fountain effect. The ONLY way I was able to spot the "move" on the demo vid is after having first received the effect and instructional material. Even then, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. It is certainly the level of performance to which I am ascribing.

Hi wmhegbli and all,
Thanks for sharing. I am a strong believer that practice and rehearsel make real magic happen. I am really into silk magic because I feel it is a classic masterpiece. And it will give you a lot of creativity to use the technic and silk in other routines. Then a combination with silk and other things is beautifully. I was dissapointed at the tips from the lecture. There are two great tips from Duane how to handle a palmo and the rest describe tricks with the use of props like a silk wonder box. IThe beauty from silk magic is that with a dye tube you can make silk appear out of your bare hands. Or transform a jokertube ball into a red silk fontain. So I am looking for using as less possible props like changeb.... or the silk wonder box. I wish that I could purchase the complete duane laflin dvd serie but that is not the reality because of the amount. So I am practise and learning step by step. I will purchase in the future laflin palmo and hankball dvd, but I am secure in what to purchase. I just left the stage to buy everything and I am going deeper in my owm material. So now I am with using two tt because one stops the flow from taking it out of your pocket or making a tt holder. Things like that Thanks all, great topic!! My best, Ronald |

I just spent a half hour writing up some comments, and the whole thing "deleted itself". I'll try to reconstruct it in a day or two.

I'm back!
First...this thread is four and a half years old. But, your comment above about the DEMON WONDER BOX, caught my attention! I've been performing (for money!) since 1945. When I started SILKS were virtually UNOBTAINABLE! (World War II) Fortunately, my mother had a few ladies silk handkerchiefs and scarves, so I was able to do a few effects. When the war was over, in August '45, silk slowly became available again. (12" silks were $.25!) Over the years, I have used (and still use) Sympathetic Silks, 20th Century Silks, Serpentine Silk, Color Change (thru hand) Stilwell handkerchief ball (productions)silk to egg, miscellaneous knots with silks, ET CETERA! I've even played with the BLOOMING CABBAGE (the silk fountain)! In 1954, I bought from the KARLAND FRISCHKORN estate, a "DEMON" WONDER BOX ($5.00!) Actually, it was a "SHERMS" WONDER BOX, but I didn't know that, then. BTW, the Sherms was better made than the Demon! I have since bought (and sold) several wonder boxes (including a "Demon". The Wonder Box became a big factor in the 20th Century Silks routine. It added time and laughs to the basic routine. About 1986, I was able to buy an extraload gimmick which made the use of the "DWB" a FEATURE of the 20th C.!!! Money can't buy the DWB from me! I don't like anyone, well enough, to give (or sell)them that prop!!! Duane Laflin and I were both working a little "regional" convention in Lafayette, Indiana about 20 years ago, and I showed him the DWB. He had never seen one. Duane was able to find a source, and now imports them. Duane does some EXCELLENT WORK with silk. He is a very good friend. In 1979, Jay Scott Berry and I were working the Magic Castle. We became friends. The last time I saw hin lecture (in New Orleans) he featured the "CLOAKING DEVICE" (Sanada). It was beautiful. I bought one, to "play" with. Jay is a fine performer, and I appreciate his artistry. I never saw Ade Duval, but I'm a "believer" in his thinking when it comes to eye appealing presentations. The Demon Wonder Box is "my" Duval's Phantom tube(s)!!! I thank you for the link (Jay). I had not seen his "blooming cabbage"!!! As far as what Jay Scott Berry effects can be done close-up I would say virtually everything that uses the Eclipse Tip, and the Cloaking Device.
Both of these gimmicks had been around for years, but Jay's modifications and additions added additional effects and visual sequences that went beyond what everyone else were using them for. In the Vortex effect where you have the Cloaking Device actually in your hand and you display your hand in the O shape it can be inches from their eyes. Jay's performances look like Magic! There is no better Silk Fountain routine than his in my opinion, magical from start to finish. Great lecturer and musician also. And his TOPIT work is as good if not better than Michael Ammar's and I know that is saying a lot.
Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.
