Hello everyone,
My wife and I went to a local dancing club last night and while we were there I approched a bouncer and showed him my hundy 500 routine, after that I produced a piece of chewing gum from some flash paper, to make a long story short he was very impressed. He then tells me he plays for a semi proffesional basketball team and he would love for me to entertain his team at a get together they are having. Since I am only use to performing for kids I don't want to take a stratosphere or hopping rabbits Routine does anyone have any advise? (By the way I did tell him I usually did kids shows but he was so intrigued by the hundy 500 he said he didn't care)
Thanks,
Bigboymagic

It's not the effects, it the performer

One perfromer will kill with the same effects that another performer will bomb with

Bigboymagic - I gave you some good information about performing family entertainment in another thread

Here is some good general information, I quote from Denny Haney
"Learn to entertain with a deck of cards"

That does not mean learn as many card effects as you can, it means learn to be entertaining and how to entertain

If your props were lost and you had a show you should still be able to go on

No one can tell you what effects to do, the right effects will find you. Hopefully without too much trial and error

Entertaining adults is not actually the same as starting over. Watch the patter to not insult adults. Otherwise, many of the same props can be used.

Strat-o-sphere can be fine with adult patter about a situation adults can understand.

Generally, remember that good magic is visual. Go with rope, silks, rings, etc. you can use with either audience. Practice, practice, practice!

Good Luck!

Another thing crossed my mind

Consider learning cups and balls. The slights, audience management, direction, planing, scripting, history, elements of surprise, presentation and all you will learn will be used in many other effects and help you in countless ways.

Can be presented so many ways and works for all ages

Recalled doing an impromptu C & B in a pub using lime wedges for balls

Thanks for the advice guys I never thought about cups and balls I will have to look more into it. Hey Bob I was in the audience at your lecture on silks Tuesday night in Dallas for the Dallas magic club and I purchased your silk to egg trick do you have or know of any books or DVD's focusing on the handeling of this effect?

I agree that it is the performer, not the tricks. You obviously performed great for the bouncer, just keep it up!

I knew you had great taste! LOL That is a good crew there. Several old friends were there too that I see all over the world but never at home in Dallas. It was an honor!

There is a good free demo on Whit Haydn's site.

Silk to Egg instructions Rice and Tarbell:
The Rice Encyclopedia has a whole section on this in Volume 3, Chapter 21. And Lesson 19 in Tarbell Volume 1 is another chapter with good instructions on the regular Silk to Egg.

If you got the Walk-Around version at the lecture, the orange instruction sheet should help you with that routine. Of course, there is also everything in Walk-Around prop set to do the others. (Don't forget what I showed you about using the props for sponge ball routines too! Getting six 2" sponge balls into action at once is not something every magician can do without constantly going to the pockets.)

Enjoy!

PS --- The Silk Statistics sheet that was given to you at the lecture also gives you direct contact information if the silk gets you down and stomps you. (Rubberband magic is the one I cannot retain! Poor old Al Angello and others must think I have no memory at all.)
