...underwear. Does anyone know about this? It usually begins with finding a piece of rope sticking out the bottom of one's trousers/pants, then goes to the other side, then becomes stuck, then you pull real hard and out comes a pair of boxers. Does anyone know what this trick is called?

Prof. Cheers rope trick (or Professor Cheers Rope Trick). It has been discussed here at the Café.

Harry, thanks. Again, just to let you know, I'm going to be adding this trick in with a handcuff escape.
Don P.S. - just found it on Hocus-Pocus for $75.00. |

Hey Don,
The one on Hocus-Pocus is not Professor Cheer’s rope trick. It is a different version by Pavel. Pavel’s version (basically an update of a Fantisio trick that Bob Sheets turned into a minor miracle) adds a pair of boxer shorts appearing as you cut yourself in half with a length of rope. This is a comedy penetration of a rope through your body with a shorts kicker. It is not bad. Professor Cheers Rope Trick usually costs less than $20.00 (check out Hank Lee or Magic Smith). It is the version where rope is pulled from a sleeve, then gets stuck, then pulled out of a pants leg, gets stuck, pulled out of the other pants leg and with a final tug pulls out the boxer shorts. Two different methods, two different presentations, both with the same kicker. You decide which you want. Hope this helps a little. Harry

Hi Don,
Nothing to add about the Professor Cheers Rope Trick. Harry was right on as usual. Just wanted to say, "What a great idea, combining it with a handcuff escape!" |

Harry, Hocus-Pocus has two versions of the Professor Cheers effect and they do have Pavel's but Pavel's is different then what I want.
If you want, I can give you the item numbers so you can see what I'm trying to order and so you can tell me if it is worth it or not. Don P.S. - on Hocus-Pocus, they are calling the items Pro Professor Cheers Comedy Rope Routine, for $75.00, and Professor Cheer's Comedy Rope Trick, for $15.95. Pavel's is Pavel Rope Through Body, for $65.00. I just wish they had item numbers. I found these right before I rechecked and searched under rope. Any advice if the Pro is worth the extra $60.00? Don. |

Hey Don,
I checked them out. The big difference between the Professional Professor Cheer’s Comedy Rope Routine and the “regular” one (beside the price!) is that the Professional has a harness that organizes and holds the rope and helps it run smoothly. The “regular” version simply tucks the rope (and shorts) under the belt. Is that worth $60.00 to you? The effect is absolutely the same. The original (regular) Prof. Cheers has been on the market for over thirty years and no improvements until now. But then, not that many people really do the effect. It is a bit of a pain to set-up (not much, but it is not instant-reset!). The Pavel thing is entirely different. The effect is different, the working is different, however the set-up is similar (something hidden away), and you end up with a pair of shorts on a length of rope. Otherwise, two different tricks! Which to buy? How often are you going to perform it? I have never seen or done the Pavel routine. I like the way it looks and can make it at home (but won’t). I have and use the old (regular) Professor Cheers version. I have been performing it for over 30 years (off and on again). I have rebuilt it several times (once you see it you will know what I mean). My original cost was less than $10.00 thirty years ago. Hope this helps a little.

Harry, yes it does help.
I just have to debate which one to buy and if it is worth getting. I'm not sure how many times I'll be using it, and since hardly anyone performs it, that would be a plus. I want to be different, but don't want to be doing the same trick as someone else. Also, what kind of magic do you do Don? P.S. - maybe you can help me decide what to do for an act. Don |

Don, if you don’t think that you will be performing the trick that often (say no more than once a week), then I personally would buy the cheaper version. The harness thing is a convenience that you won’t fully exploit. If you find that you are working more and more, then you could upgrade later.

I perform Prof Cheers at all my kid shows. They love it. When I got mine, it came with the l**ps taped with white paper tape if you can believe it! Also, the right leg rope was too short. The tape soon pulled apart, so I sewed the l**ps by hand and switched in a longer piece for the left leg, and I, and my boxers, haven't looked back yet.

Great, glad to hear that people are still using this effect. I've only seen it done once.

Also, the one I bought came with briefs, not boxers. I had to sew my own boxers in.

Mine is homemade too. The last three that I have used have been homemade.
I am an under-tall, sort of smallish person. I pull out a super jumbo (XXXL) set of boxers out. They are very (very, very) colorful. To save on bulk, I cut half the elastic waistband out and sewed the top closed. They still look like a full pair of shorts. The contrast between the size of the boxers and me is truly funny.

I was asked to work at an awards banquet and sit at the head table. I was doing the Prof Cheer rope trick at the time, so I decided to go to the banquet, in suit and tie, all set for it.
It was a hot, sticky night...no air in the hall...I sat, and sat and sat...the speeches were too long (as usual). When done, the MC said, "We had Pete here to entertain us, but the night has gone too long, I'm sure he'd be glad to come back next month and do his act, thanks and good night." ARGH.....here I was with this huge load of rope on my body, sweating like a dog and NO SHOW... double ARGH... To unload I went into the men's room and pulled the rope out. You guessed it...a couple of guys walked in while I was pulling the rope out of my pants! And it was in San Francisco!!! Isn't magic fun?... Now I am doing "ROPED"... a simpler version, although you have to open with it. Gee, I just thought about it... you CAN do the "shorts" ending with ROPED...

My friend just performed this in our IBM ring fundraiser show. It is one of the tricks the audience remembered most along with my bowling ball production.

I have a standard version of Prof Cheer that I'd be willing to part with for $10. New, never used. It was given to me as a gift and I already had one plus I have the new "harness" version.
