I just received a wand made by Jonathon Levit's father, Steven, and I must say this thing is absolutely gorgeous. If you read any of my ads, you know I am not a fan of overpriced "sticks" but to the Levits' credit, they have kept the price of these wands to a modest level, starting at $105 and going up to $150. Most of the other high end wand makers start at $250.00 and go way up.
Jonathon is a local St. Louis magician who went on to much bigger and better things in both magic and non-magic acting. I'm sure most magicians recognize him from the Celebrity Magician reality TV show, of which he was the host. I've known him since he was just a kid. I am a real believer in supporting the efforts of people I've known, but, that aside, even if I never knew Jonathon from Adam, I would still highly recommend these wands. Mine is from his premium line and made of exotic hardwoods, cocobolo and blackwood with faux ivory bands. Having owned wands by everyone from Joe Porper to Thomas Wayne to Owen Magic, I can say this one is easily equal to those in quality and appearance, and at a much more reasonable price. There's not much you can say about a wand from a review standpoint, except that it is elegant and the weight and balance feels perfect. If you are looking for a very fine magic wand, be sure to check them out. Even if you don't buy one, I'm sure you would enjoy visiting his website http://www.levitmagic.com and seeing the gallery of beautiful wands. Update: I want to be accurate. My review stated that the wand were priced from $105 to $150. However, the wand I purchased is now called, "The Signature Wand" and sells for $175.00. It is the only wand in the gallery that is more than $150.00. Looking at it right here in my hand, I must say this thing is really gorgeous. Okay, now my review is 100% accurate; they are priced from $105 to $150 with only one model higher at $175.00. Check them out. |

Somewhat like good diamonds vs blood diamonds, I believe there is good ivory vs bad ivory, or at least. "pre-ban" ivory which is grandfathered in and can still be used.
My understanding is that when you buy a cue or wand with ivory you also get documents about it's origin so you can travel without having your item confiscated. |

Those that I know that use Ivory are using stock they have had for MANY MANY years. I'll ask one friend that has some what the real story is.

I don't own a Thomas Wayne wand, but I marvel at the craftsmenship. It's obvious to me that he spends many moons making sure that his wands are revered as Best in Show.
With that said, there's no reason why TW needs to be the ONLY guy to sell really great quality wands. Brett Sherewood sells the best cups EVER! But there are lots of great quality cups out there as well. I like the Levit Wand. I looks very elegant and would be something I would use. There's plenty of room on the market for other wands w/o this getting into a mud slinging contest. Let's play nice... Christopher

There's a review in the August issue of Genii that may be of interest. Look on page 75. The review, "Exotic Wood Wands" by Stephen Levit was very interesting.

My wands (and Joe Porper's wands) are two-piece wands with precision machined joints, and they come with beautiful hand-made leather cases (lined with billiard cloth). There are major differences between this sort of workmanship and simple one-piece wands, and you get what you pay for. Additionally, if an accent band or inlay in one of my wands is "white" it is genuine Ivory, not plastic ("faux ivory" - lol). For wands that are sold within the U.S. this is usually antique Elephant Ivory; foreign orders contain pre-historic Mammoth Ivory - this practice is legal and in accordance with domestic and international law. I've got one of the "Malone Wands" (I don't know if that's the official name or not), which is a wand made by Thomas Wayne, that is similar to one Bill Malone purchased years ago. It is one of my prized possessions. I like the way it breaks down into two pieces and goes into a nice leather case to be put into the breast pocket of my coat. I've also got a couple of Joe Porper wands - the latest one is the kind that folds instead of screwing together. I've been using this for R Paul Wilson's "Ring and Wand" routine.
I've seen the Levit wands and they look great! I especially like the idea that they are being made in the smaller version to be carried during a strolling situation. I'm thinking that Michael Skinner's ring (finger ring) and stick routine would work well with a smaller size wand. It's nice to have such fine artists/craftsmen who provide such things to the world of magic. |

Old Ivory is legal to sell. You can get it mostly from Museum shops. Old Ivory is "grandfathered" so does not fall under current rules.

I am glad to see the healthy discussion on this board regarding the world of magic wands. Let me first say that there are beautiful wands being crafted in our community. Thomas Wayne and Joe Porper create wonderful pieces and I have the utmost respect for both artisans. I own Porper wands myself.
With regard to my father, he has been a magician for over half a century. He is an artist and a craftsman and has chosen to bring his work to the world of magic that he so loves. Magic wands are special to magicians and each has a unique feel, whether they come from Wayne, Porper, Stephen Levit, or anyone else. No one wand is perfect for every magician. Obviously, I'm biased, but I am quite proud of the work my father is doing with these wands and I'm glad to help him offer them to the magic community. Also, regarding the faux ivory we are using in the wands, just to clarify, there are many materials that can be used to achieve the look and feel of real ivory. My father has the ability to use real ivory, tague nut, or a man-made material. For the obvious ethical and legal reasons, we have chosen not to use real ivory in the wands that are available on our website. Thomas is correct that the wands in the gallery section of the website are currently using a man-made material in place of real ivory. Tague nut is a natural material and is a high quality replacement for ivory. This is also available upon request for custom made wands. However, it is interesting to note that the look of the man-made material and tague nut are virtually identical. We do have on hand a certain amount of real ivory that has been grandfathered and is not subject to the current laws (as Pete Biro mentioned). This is available, upon request. However, as is commonly known, the cost of real ivory is quite expensive and therefore requires a custom price quote for each wand. I'm thrilled that my father's wands have been so well received by so many magicians already and I'm looking forward to him continuing to craft more. And, I wish continued success for the other wand-makers, woodworkers and craftsman that continue to offer beautiful pieces for the world of magicians. Jonathan Levit |

Jonathan's post clearly shows what a class act he is. I wish nothing but success for all the wand makers, but I'm glad to see the Levit wand on the market. They are beautiful pieces of art.

Thank you to all of you who have posted here. I'm glad those of you that have received your Levit Wand are happy with the quality and feel of the wands. And thanks to Lou for your kind words.
I have just updated our website (www.levitmagic.com) with a new feature that is very exciting. You can now build and preview your custom wand! This was a feature that was requested by some of our customers. This will help you in seeing how all of the materials look together. And even if you don't intend to buy a wand today, you should try this out - it's a lot of fun! I've shown it to a few people already and they are having a blast trying out different combinations. Check it out at the website. Just visit the gallery section and then the custom order page. And, please spread the word. Again, my thanks to all of you for your support! Jonathan |
