At the end of the day. We are all here to make a living out of Entertaining children.
Some of us are good entertainers, some not to bad and some will be down right awfull. but that's the same in anything. Singers, great, good, bad. Vents, Great, good, bad. Jugglers etc etc. In fact all sorts of jobs there will be people who are great, not so great, good and bad. Members of parliment, oh sorry that's just bad. So this sort of debate will go on and on for ever. Just try to be the best you can.

I'm not wasting my time arguing with you guys. You believe me or you don't - I don't care. I tried to offer my insight and you turn it into a fight. Using my videos as a personal attack is disgraceful. But then that's your way of arguing I suppose.
I could fight back, but I have a life and and a show in the morning, so I'm going to let you play with yourselves. |

Why dismiss his words so quickly, just because it is not your style? Hey, it works for him! I have no doubt that John Breed’s book will shortly end up next to my Silly Billy, David Ginn, Martin Lewis and Bob Markwood books as outstanding resources for entertaining children, but why can’t we learn that different styles work for different personalities? If shouting works for you then let the kids SHOUT! This is really the answer to Wayne’s question. Shouting CAN, most certainly, be entertainment. But not necessarily for me and my personality. Would it surprise you to know that I perform the linking rings to classical music in the middle of every kid show I do, including 3 and 4 year olds? Would it surprise you to know that these kids will sit quietly without a sound throughout the routine? Would it surprise you to know that this is one of my most talked about moments in my show? And finally, would it surprise you to know that I get many, many repeat bookings? I’m sure I don’t have to worry about anyone stealing this idea. It works for ME and MY personality. No children’s performer would be caught dead doing this. Books are great resources and a great starting point. But you don’t know what will really work for you and your personality unless you try it.

JoJo) Well Ken, no one is saying that kids can't shout. It's mainly about the old "I can't hear you!!!!! I can't hear you"!!!! style of getting the kids to shout, rather than have your funny situations getting the kids to react naturally on their own without the old "I CAN'T HEAR YOU"!!!!!, just to get a reaction as otherwise the kids will just sit there and stare at the performer blankly. Most likely because the entertainer is not able to get them reacting otherwise. I very much believe that performers who need to use that on a kids audience needs to have a good long look at their show and see what's missing. Do yourself a favor Ken and get John's book. It will definitely go a lot further that some of the authors book you've mentioned above. JoJo Ken said: This is really the answer to Wayne’s question. Shouting CAN, most certainly, be entertainment. JoJo: Are you saying that using the old gag of "I can't hear you" to rile up the kids IS entertainment? This is the crux of the discussion here I reckon. I for one can't go along with that. Don't get me wrong kids get loud during my shows too, just not from me stooping the old "I CAN'T HEAR YOU" back and forth with the kids. I can't recommend John's book highly enough Ken. I've read some of the authors you've mentioned and reckon John is more than up there with them. JoJo

It looks like I"m SHOUTING OUT THAT HIS BOOK IS GREAT, WHICH IT IS. GET IT AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF! I'm not the only one saying it by the way. The world's greatest kids entertainer reckons it's great as well.

Again to throw my 2 cents in.....Sometimes a group needs a little spark. I've performed at plenty of parties where the children, either because of energy level or ethnic customs, are not aware that they can 'shout' during the show. So getting them to shout louder via the 'I can't hear you' bit is appropriate. I use that at the very beginning of my show. I wouldn't use all the way through.
And just as an aside...I was at a concert a few years ago by those no nothing entertainers, The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger says to the crowd "the one thing I remember about the Giants Stadium crowd from the last time we performed was that you were really loud" (and the crowd roared!!.) I guess he should have waited for more natural reactions!!! |
