How do you close your mentalism act? I have been trying to find the prefect closer for a year or so. I was thinking about the ‘Russian Roulette’ routine but, changed my mind. I then was thinking about a stigmata type effect but, haven't got a method I like. What effect can really hit hard on a lay crowd?

The Russian Roulette thing has always bothered me, in as much as, after the big build up... the climax is....

Besides Q&A, also consider a multiple book test routine, involving several audience members on stage, with a stong visual closer. Hope this helps.

My first choice when possible is an audio taped headline prediction. I really don't know how you can follow it with anything, although others may feel you can.

I'm not going to tip what I do but maybe an idea to think about is to use anchoring.
I anchor the first effect I do in my act to my closer. When I close the act there is something I use which triggers people's memories of the first thing I did. As most people remember things in sequence and I structure my act so the each routine is linked to the preceeding one..... Also a friend reminded me of something the other day. Years ago when Blackstone came to the UK we were lucky enough to see his presentation of Floating Lightbulb. He actually told you it was going to be good before he started. this got us talking about jokes of all things. you know how you start off a joke by saying "This isn't a very good one but I will tell you it anyway..." and when you finish people agree with you? Well, if you set them up for a good joke and told it with enthusiasm I bet they would laugh. Just a thought but there's nothing wrong in telling people that what they are about to see *is* good as long as you don't come accros as being cocky. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I could be a million miles away. |

to end a show i perform the t.k. timber. I have (what i think) is a strong presentation for it. after the block falls i usually hear gasp from audience and i kind of "stumble" of stage for a moment and walk back on "gathering" my self and then the applause begins. it has always worked very well for me. if i am doing a bigger show i end with fogel's "cheating the gallows"

What Q&A should I look into? Docc Hilford's Q&A is a little bit unpractical for me.

I suggest Richard Osterlinds Q&A. It is very practical.

For Q&A, Lee Earle puts out a great video which will cover everything you need to know.

Magic Square. I used to think these things sucked. However, since my show is presented as a demonstration of psychology and the potential of the human mind, it just fit. Plus, it is seems so impossible to the spectators that you just can't follow it.
