I've been using Axel's and Baxt's wonderful newspaper tears these days, but a week ago I revisited Pat Page 10-second newspaper tear.
I read the instruction from his book, sought some tips from a few magician friends, and started practicing it just for the sake of seeing the effect again. Wow, I rediscovered is beauty! The set-up is probably less than 10 seconds (definitely no need for glue, no wires/gimmicks, no need for scissors, no tapes) when you've mastered it already. I can set it up in 3 seconds, just like in Bauer's version! The process of tearing is easy, and the restoration is flash!--just a flick of the right hand and the whole newspaper is instantly restored! Although versions by Anderson, Axel, and Baxt have their advantages, for sheer simplicity and practicality, this version is top notch. And to top it all, Page's version is RARELY seen nowadays. Is anybody here STILL using it? Then please share your experience. Thanks. |

Yes, it is excellent. I first learned it from an old Patrick Page video (I think from Videonics).

I wasn't crazy about it, but maybe I'll take another look.

I've used it as a back up when I don't have the time or gear to set up a Gene Anderson. As always, we need to have multiple methods for everything we do.

We teach it to the Wiz Kids (who are ready for it) because it is self-contained and easily made up from free advertising newspapers. The Torn and Restored Comic Book, while not terribly expensive, thanks to Dollar Store comic books, still costs something and takes considerably more than ten seconds to get ready, so we save that for those who have mastered the Pat Page Ten Second Tear. The really advanced Wiz Kids go on to learn Eleazar's Ultimate Newspaper Tear. By teaching them in this order, they can always fall back on the Pat Page Tear when they need something absolutely amazing in a hurry and for free!

What size newspaper does this use? Is it full size like the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, or is it the smaller tabloid size like the Enquirer?

Pat Page 10 Second Tear: usually tabloid size, but it can be done with a full size newspaper.
Gerrish's TR Comic Book: can be done with very small digest sized "Archie" comic books, to regular sized comic books, magazine pages and tabloid sized newspaper. Eleazar's Ultimate Newspaper Tear: Full sized down to tabloid sized.

PAt Page's method is very clever for impromptu situations, but for a tabloid T and R that is extraordinarily good..I think the Elmsley method is the one to beat!

The Gene Anderson version was the first version I learned but I've been using the Elmsley method most often over the years. I did learn Page's version but I never performed it because of my preference for the Elmsley version.

Can anyone point me to where I can learn Page's tear? I've been looking for it because of all the good things I have learned from the Secret Seminars DVDs. His Paper Magic program deliberately does not have the 10-second tear in it because he was marketing it separately (according to the DVD). However, I can't find where this effect is marketed!
So, any guidance for a new guy? -Patrick |

The Big Book of Magic is a little goldmine if you read. It also got Pat thrown out the Magic Circle for exposure but yet they did not throw out the illustrator. Go figure.

The Magic Circle was as misguided in that decision as when they threw out David Devant for his popular press exposures.

Yes, they were. As I said they threw one guy out and not the other.

Maybe because the illustrator could claim that what he did was. present magic as an...."ART"? LOL

Thank you!
I will be at the library later this week and will place an ILL request. Personally, I love both the DVD format and books. If a book is good, I'd rather have that than a DVD. I'll buy either for a trick I really want, but I feel that a well-written book will normally have a load more to offer me. Mark Wilson's book is worth a lot more than the cover price, for example. -Patrick |

Joel did steal another magician's method, I believe it was Alan Shaxon, but at this time since the original discussion, it could have been another magician. Wally, all newspaper tears are the same, the audience sees a magician tear up a news paper, and it is instantly magically restored. Each method could be different to accomplish the same effect. |

So....... Pat Page and David Devant were thrown out of the Magic Circle for exposure?.....Hmm........
Years ago the Magic Castle threw out Frances Marshall for not following their strict dress code! |
