Hello All,
We have a very sick young girl in our local area who does not have long to live her family has requested my services. I have long moved away from doing kids shows and I am a little scared about jumping back in and entertaining a 9 year old. A lot of restructuring and pulling out the old stuff will be needed when I do this show for them.
The uncle requested I do snow storm in china. He saw it done on TV by Kevin James. I am a bit worried about doing this due to the fact I would rather keep everything upbeat and knowing this girl will not be with us much longer makes that effect even more heart wrenching. I know I can re-script it and make it work I just don’t know if I can perform it given the emotional impact it will have on me as well as the little girl.
What are your thoughts, has anyone had this dilemma before, and how do you break it to the family that it is just not the write effect given the circumstances.

Any thoughts on this would be great.
Thanks
--Floyd

I live by the old adage, "If in doubt, leave it out". You're being asked to create a special experience for this little girl and a life long memory for the rest of the family. If you feel that snowstorm is too serious an effect for this show, don't do it.

About a year ago, I was hired to perform a show for a young family whose mother was suffering from cancer. We knew she had less than a month to live. The kids had literally watched their mom get weaker and weaker over the course of a 6 month period and they had literally lived at the the hospital. Friends of the family wanted to give the mom and the kids a special experience, where the kids could simply be kids again. That was my mission.

Instead of focusing on all of the stresses, I showed up and simply did my show. The kids absolutely loved it, and for an hour, they were allowed to forget about their mom's illness. They got the chance to become kids again. Their mom was at the show as well, and she got to see the joy in her childrens faces, and hear the exuberance in their laughter. Mission accomplished.

It sounds like you're on a similar mission. Keep it upbeat. Keep it fun. Forget about the illness being suffered by this young girl. Do your show and let her enjoy it to the best of her ability. Let her have an hour or so where she can just be a kid again. Best wishes, and God Bless.

Check this link out it is a Stars Routine, You obviously will not be able to copy it as it is an Adult Show act However it may give you some ideas where to go with this to keep it up beat.

Kent,
Thank you very much I guess I just needed to hear the confirmation from another person who has been in this position.

Thanks for the link, I have done my good friend Dan Harlan Starkile before. Combiding it with snowstorm does give me some ideas and I thank you for that. I truly think it is going to come down to what is best for the little girl and maybe I can work something special with a dove pan that will leave a lasting memory for her and her family and stay away from the snow all togeather.

Thanks for the help guys.

Why is the snow storm a sad effect? Make it fun, talk about seeing snow, smile!

Futureal, that is why it is a sad effect in this situation. When you live up north like we do, snow is something we see a lot of. When you know someone will not ever see snow again, it makes it hard to digest for the family. It sounds easy enough I know, but this is a very hard thing to decide on. Thank you for your thoughts and I agree it could be made fun, yet I did come up with something just as fun and more fitting.

Update: the 4th of July came and was a very special day for her. After talking it over and explaining the mess snowstorm would make we decided not to do snowstorm and instead perform Collard and Princess and the Pea both very upbeat and touching routines.
Sadly yesterday July 7 the little girl passed on so her time with us was much shorter then expected. I am still saddened by this and don't have much more to add.
For anyone every in this situation, know it is the most honor we as magicians could ever get for what we do.

I would like to thank you all for your PM and support.

Thank You,
Floyd

Floyd thank you for sharing. It's always a heartfelt and moving experience when doing magic for a very sick child. I was touched by your question on snow storm and feel that you made the right decision. Your show may have ended in tears and longing instead of being upbeat.

I wish I knew what to say; I feel saddened by your story but also glad that the little girl had a very magical and special day. You are a great performer for giving her and her parents a wonderful memory.
