I agree that Jay's performance was good, but I find the thread otherwise amusing because America's Got Talent is NOT a competition. The judges do not have final authority over who moves on and who doesn't (the producers do). The finalists are chosen solely at the discretion of the producers and their is a sort of negotiation involved in the process. This is not a contest but a variety show staged as a contest. That means that Jay could be the greatest magician who ever lived, but if he doesn't fit the producer's profile (based on who they think will maximize ratings for the show and maximize performance proceeds realized by the finalists and winner), he will not win.

How many other magicians have been on America's Got Talent so far?

I believe there were 5 so far.
I am told that one young illusionist that was the topic of discussion here back in January has auditioned.

Have to keep in mind that this is TV and they want and have to put on a good show people will watch. That is why some acts I feel are totally done for the purpose of being laughed at and X'd out. On the other hand, I know there are acts that do not even have to audition cause they are brought in my AGT to perform. It's all done to try and get the best show people will watch.

Members of The Magic Café, I thought we were the best magicians in the world. How come none of us went on that show?

MB, two years ago, Jay auditioned for America's Got Talent with his dove act. Unfortunately, the judges did not enjoy the dove act and he was cut.
As was hinted at during this episode after Jay performed his Shrink-O-Matic, if the judges have seen a specific type of magic effect often in the past, they do not seem to give it a favorable review. This might prove to be the case the case with dove acts. It might not be his strongest offering. Now, if you and I were trying to give Jay advice, perhaps we would not have picked the Lean and the Shrinkomatic to audition. I know it would not have been my first choice for someone hoping to get onto the show. (Heck, nor would "bump in the night" for that matter. Sometimes we lose perspective as performers, and we forget what excites an audience.) Yet, fortunately for Jay, it was just the right combination that clicked, and he made it past the initial review! |

These judges, and people in general, have for the most part seen EVERYTHING....its all about how you present it that will win you pretty much anything. I think he has a great presentation. |

They might have a great presentation as judged by magicans as we have a different perspective on things. The lay public isn't the same. Unless it's something totally different, they will many times just say, "We've already seen the trick where the guy pulls the birds out" and dismiss it as unoriginal and pedestrian, no matter what skill the steals show. Criss Angel did whatappeared to be a decent dove routine in Believe and it was roundly critiqued by the lay public as boring and old school.
If we're performing for our own conventions, we can do any act that we as magicians find interesting. When performing for the public, especially for mainstream media, we have to wake up to what expectations are outside our insulated circle.

I agree with you Ray. In fact I was attempting to make that same point in a previous post on this thread. I have heard several mention that Jay's dove act is extremely unique. Now I've not yet had the pleasure to see it so that very well may be true. But you will often hear from other magicians how unique something is but to laymen it looks like the same old thing. That's why I never really put much weight in a magician's opinion about another magician because they are going to be judging it by a different criteria than a lay audience.

I'm with you, Bill. If we're booking a magic convention it's totaly different. I know several acts that KILL at conventions but couldn't get arrested for lay audiences, and that's fine. Just know your market and fly with it. I love the Our Magic rule of always tailoring the act or effect from the point of view of a disintrested spectator. Then you have the best odds of success in the real world.

MB, I think you glossed over and did not read my post.
Jay Mattioli did indeed perform that same exact wonderful unique award winning dove act two years ago at the NYC audition, and did not make it past the judges on America's Got Talent. They did not like it. He was cut from AGT because of the dove act. Seems foolish to bring back the same dove act that was cut two years ago when there is now a very real potential for one million dollars hanging in the balance. |

It would be more easier to tell by watching a clipping of his dove act. Does anyone have a link to the exact dove act you are talking about?
Another reason why judges boost a performer is because of age. Between a child and adult competing, some judges might look at it as if the adult started first. But the adult probably started only 9 months ago. The child probable started two years ago. |

Hi LeeAlex - He'll be on again at the callback episodes. He has a new demo up on YouTube, and is using your vest! *smile* Hopefully we'll see your vest on primetime this year *grin*

Anyone can see that America's Got Talent is a set-up!
Come on, use some simple common sense. After 3 or more levels before making it on-air, there is NO WAY that some of those terrible acts could have made it unless they are purely there for telelvised entertainment value, not as a legitimate talent competition. A guy with a cheap chair suspension is the best they ahve seen? No way . And now Nathan Burton is back ... obviously, the guy has a contract with them. Come on, some of you guys have been in the business long enough to see this. I'll bet they already have the wimmer pegged. |
