Izzy Jay, don't believe a 3D printer can make an hollow egg shape. It may have to be made in 2 halves, then glued together. Then they seam made invisible.
All I have seen is very odd colors, being made with 3D printers, has white resin ben created yet? |

You can make whatever color you like (as long as you have that color printing material, obviously) or paint after the object is printed. Either way, I guess nobody tried making it yet.

The fact that the egg needs to have a hole makes it somewhat easier to make. Theoretically. Or not.

Anyone here on the Café got any experience with 3D printing?
These guys make/print some interesting magical items. https://www.3dmagicworks.com maybe I should ask them. |

Search in the Workshop topic, there are several people showing what they made. There is a girl who is very knowledgeable with 3D printing. I am sure she can answer any questions you have.

I've printed an egg with my 3D printer, but not a hollow one. It's easy to modify the design to make it hollow and I think if it prints the egg in a vertical orientation it should be easy to print. I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

Here's the rendering of the silk to egg. I have a small test print running now. When it looks good I'll run a full size print.

How thick are you making the shell?

Here it is. It may be too thin. It takes some trial and error to get all the dimensions just right.
I have an entry-level printer and I ran this in "good" mode rather than "excellent" mode. So while this is not a great specimen it shows that it can be done. Click here to view attached image. |

I just pulled it off the printer. It feels strong enough to use. Tomorrow I'll try one on the "excellent" setting and see how it comes out.

And this was made in a single piece. Not two halves glued together. Incredible.
Just a side note. Most of the professional versions have the hole in an oval shape. Easier to work with. |

Oh well, I guess practice makes perfect.
But as you said earlier, it just shows that it can be done. With a bit of trial and error, the perfect egg is not that far away. |

If I wanted to produce realistic eggs for silk to egg I wouldn't use 3D printing. I'd make a silicone mold from a real egg then slush cast it with a compound like Smooth Cast 300. This would give you a hollow egg with virtually no seam. You would just need to drill the hole when the resin cured. Smooth Cast 300 sets in 3 minutes. It turns white when it cures..
