We all know that in spite of some great performers appearing on America's Got Talent (Nathan Burton, Kevin James, The Pendragons, etc...) the show is not considered to be particularly friendly to our art as a form of entertainment.
This season, we have several magicians getting through and one huge rejection (so far). I'd be very interested in the feedback from our community on what you are seeing. If you have missed the shows, you can find all the video and links at MagicNewswire.com. Feedback please! Maybe this will help the next "Magician" that wants to show the world what they can do. Marti is a joke. That guy needs to stop doing magic. He showed up with a chair lev?????? My son could do better than that and he has never performed for anyone. If anyone on this site nows Marti please tell him for the sake of the art to stop performing.
As for the others I have seen. I was very impressed with the guy that did the lean. I liked how he performs his energy and style. I think he can do well. The other 2 were good and I thought should have moved on, but I don't think they will make it real far in the competition. Is the guy that ate the light bulb a magician? Also it seems like there was another sort of "magician" on there as well?? |

So far from what I have seen Drew Thomas and Jay Mattioli, has a good chance to do something. Both have done big shows and have some time performing cruse ships.
There was a quick clip of a guy break dancing and doing sponge balls not sure who he was but would like to see more of him. The guy with his wife and kids on the show I think did well, and I don't think they gave them a fair shake by saying they had to think about it. As for Marty, I think the guy needs an act! I don't want to put him down I don't know him, but he came on just doing store bought tricks. I will say this and I mean this truly, it takes a lot of guts to get on a show like that and perform. I felt bad for him for many reasons. Enough said! The problem with the show is I think the producers want to see David Copperfield style magic. If magic is to be represented then it needs to be new and different, the illusions can not be like Lance or like anything done in Vegas currently. Matter of fact I don't think illusionists will ever win this contest. I truly believe if we had a good comedy magician like Mac King on there they would do well and could possibly win the thing. The problem comes down to the amount of time and being able to get someone on stage to work with you as a helper, with those restraints you are left with only being able to use back stage help and that hurts the impact of the effect. By the way here is a link to Jay promo video, the guy who did his promo also did the VO work for mine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZFC2YB5glU No matter who all shows up to this contest lets get behind them, it would be great to see a magician or mentalist win this year. --Floyd

Between editing and "Stories", they give more time to those who wou;d hurt our art (such as Marty) then to those who show some originality like Tom. I am glad to see Jay move on, but do not hold much hope that ANY magician will go far. (It would please me to be wrong on this one. |

Just to let you know Marti is exactly what you saw perform. He is the single biggest monster of a guy I've ever met in magic.
Note: Monster is not meant in any complimentary way. |

He'll add a zero to the end of his paychecks for being able to say "As seen on AGT".
Not too shabby, despite what we may think of his performance....

My own two cents...When I saw Marti I choked on my tangerine...But the man has cojones. I have known several people who have tried out for that show and it does take a LOT of guts to get out there in front of that many live people, a celebrity judge panel, and all of America. Sadly, this guy was...well...bad. I feel bad saying this, but it's true and we all admit it, even if we want to be nice. I say about him as I have said about MANY people: If you are going to go on this show or something like it make sure you get honest feedback and perform for strangers and even people that hate you because your family and friends will do nothing but encourage you. I have heard many people (not on here but in conversations I've had) that he did a bad thing for magic by going on that show and making a fool of himself. I disagree with this. Though he looked like a joke let us not forget the countless wonderful magicians that have been on this show. Sure, they don't get much screen time and never make it all the way BUT the do get magic in the public eye again. All Marti did was really hurt himself. If not for his unpolished, out of the box, generic beginner magic then for his adittude. His personality was rather offputting and the way he handeled it was just unprofessional. I cannot imagine this guy gets much work, but I do see him getting LESS work after this. ven if he says he was on AGT, all people have to do is WATCH the clip to see that he is not someone they would want to come to their location on their dime.
Still, as I said, he has cojones, and I respect him for at least getting out there. I have yet to have the guts to get out there and try out myself but maybe one year. And I beleive the question was "Does America have talent thisyear?" well I must say yes. The majority of the american magicians we've seen have an amazing deal of talent. And lets not forget about all the magicians that we DIDN'T see because they had to make room for all the singers. (It is, after all, a vocal contract you're signing when you audition...sad....American Idol by another name, but I digress) And while on the subject of all of this I would like to put in my own two cents on this: Magicians seem hated on this show, but lets look at it another way...The judges seem to love the majority of the magicians that come on...So why do magicians never make it all the way? Why are most cut out before the finale? Well, they are competing for a show in Vegas, and one of the cliches of Vegas is how many magicians there are. I feel that maybe AGT is looking for new talent to bring to Vegas other than Magicians. My two cents... Trick. |

Nyte,
I agree, I personally know someone who made it to the final 8 last year none magician. The bottom line is they are looking for Vegas act that will draw in the money down the road. Could a Magician be this ticket they are looking at promoting, YOU BET!!! But if the magicians who are on this show do not get that big illusions, and simple card tricks are not the answer then I am sorry but we may never see a magician win this contest. Kevin James did a great job, he brought in some great illusions, yet did not make it. Trust me I have all the admiration in the world for illusionists and what they do. Yet I cant help but think what a good stand up magician could do with this show, combining comedy and magic. I am very interested in seeing what Tom Durnin does with his shot on this show. The wife and I had a little chat about Marti she said it best, sometimes people don't know they are bad. Yes we cringe at the thought of him representing that magic community, but you are right, how many singers went on saying they have a voice of angles and yet sound like they were dieing. Interesting to say the least. Only time will tell, I just hope that if there are any magicians competing for this show, they come here and read what we have to say. I think this advice could go a long way.
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

Ace,
The Kevin James thing was sad. The main reason for him no going on was, from what I've heard from people he's spoken with, because they had originally said he had X amount of time, and so he planned stuff for THAT much time, and then right before he went on before he could have a chance to change things they said nope you have a lot less time. So of course, he didn't get to do his full final act, Peirce hated it because it wasn't what it was supposed to be, and America said See-ya. Sad. Kevin James could've gone a long way. I do agree that what we need to see is a good stand up magician. Honestly, I'm waiting for someone to go the Terry Fator route and combine singing and magic. But that would be a little...odd. I guess Vent lends itself to singing whereas magic does not. I have recently looked at Marti's youtube channel...His "promo video" as it were, looks like it was shot in front of a curtain in his house with his audience being friends who clap on cue. One of these "audience members" is more interested in dancing to the music than watching him. I honestly wondered if maybe it was all a big joke and he was poking fun at magic...Sadly no, he was not. I really do feel bad for people who are so "unpolished" (i hate saying "bad" and judging because I am not the best) and do not realize it. This goes not only for magicians but singers, comedians, vents, and everything we see on AGT. These are the people that get a lot of screen time because it gets ratings, but I feel sorry that America is laughing at them and they don't realize it. But I digress...The point is America DOES have talent, and one year a magician WILL get through. I think the Café should band together and just go as a group to an AGT audition...SOMEONE has to make it to the final 8 right? Trick |

What it takes to succeed on this show is likability, talent, personality and a back story they can milk for al it's worth.
There are few people in magic as clever as Kevin James, but there isn't really enough personality there to make him a headliner. It's the same with most that have been on there. Nathan was great and is a working pro and got everything possible out of the gig so he made the best of it. Most magicians could be phenomenal by magic standards but mediocre by traditional show business standards. The ones that get through typically have some likable attributes, but don't understand what "star qualities" are. Terry Fator was a headliner in the waiting. The other past winners not so much. A little girl one the first year and went on to nothing. The violinists haven't gone anywhere. Terry is the only real success story so the producers are working on getting it right as well. You also have to know that they only televise the best and worst of the prospective talent. The talent bookers KNOW these people suck. That's why they're on. I always find it laughable when the judges complain about the lack of talent. Then blame your producers that booked the bad acts. American Idol is the same. If you're in the middle, you'll never make air. If you're great or lousy you can count on it.

Boy Ray !, you have nailed it this time! your comments are cogent, and exactly correct. the back story is SOO important in television today. Increasingly , it's more and more about PROCESS and less about performance.
Most reality television is some sort of competition, and they want to show us the trauma, the drama, and the struggle to make it; lose weight, win a singing competition, etc; Thanks for your fine analysis of the 'spectacle'!

So if my fiancee gets killed by a rouge spongeball while the economy was collapsing and I am AMAZING(ly horrible) I should get the most screen time?
As stupid as that statement I just made was, it's sad but true. And Ray is spot on. Terry was just amazing, he had talent, personality, and just that special "ness" that makes people want to like him. He could have been mediocre and rode his likability and personality to the bank. But he had the talent. He really was what the show was all about. As much as I get a kick out of the bad talent, I would love to see less of them and more of the better talent. Lower the bar a bit so you're not taking just the BEST but the best and the almost best...And cut out some of the awful. If they're just purely unfunny and not likeable don't waste the time. But most of all, I just want to see that one magician who can REALLY make it. Tha full package magician with charm, personality, talent, uniquness, and an amazing back story. There is one out there, somewhere, waiting for his turn to shine. And when he does, it will be amazing. |

People watch the show to feel good about themselves and realize that there are people worse off than they are.

At least you get half good acts, with the Gong show you got only bad acts.

The should seperate it. Make another show and get even more ratings. Give the good acts on AGT and AI more air time and then have a show showing just the worst or it all and call it "So This Is America" or "America's Lack of Talent" or just "Those Crappy People That You Love To Watch Because The Suck and Make You Feel Better About Yourself, So Here They Are, America!"
