In my morning paper I came across a short article which describes the precise workings of The Lean along with a picture of the gimmick. To quote the article:
"Michael Jackson was not only a great pop singer and dance artist-but he was also an inventor, patenting new technologies to support his signature moves. One trick Jackson liked to carry out during his concerts was to defy gravity. During a number, he would lean so far forward that the audience was amazed at how he did not fall over. The secret behind the gravity defying trick? A **** he invented and patented..." A trick MJ invented!! Don't you just love the accuracy of the news. |

Well, Michael Jackson does hold the patent...

The patent yes...but the claim that he invented the effect is completely misleading since it's been around for 80 odd years. Let's give credit to MJ for his creative music/dance genius but going beyond that is getting a bit much for the guy who was one of the creepiest people in show business ever.

Don't believe everything you hear in the news. One station reported that Eddie Van Halen was the guitarist on Beat It. Simply not true.

For the record Eddie Van Halen was the guitarist on beat it. He did not write the solo but he played on it.

The 1st time I heard Beat It, I knew it had to be Eddie V. It was, it is.

Hmm, this is one of those effects where the act is far more important than how its done.
If memory serves me right it was a staple of old theatre variety shows and burlesque and I have seen numerous movies over the years that expose the methods of doing this...not sure that its very important exposure and most folk would have a good idea of ways of doing this. |
