Ok since noone is buying my bungee system here's what I really do.
Make a joke or 2 then explain that the kid needs to go on adult's lap incase I trip over them. Important that it's an adult as a toddler squirming in the lap of a child in the front row doesn't really improve the situation. As far as the jokes go there are a million of them. Just be funny. |

This happened to me at a festival recently. 200 people were sitting on a hillside and I was just beginning my show when a tiny child, barely able to walk, wandered onto my performing space. I had a swiss warbler in my mouth, so I began making squeaks and trying to direct him back to his parents. It turned out hilarious, as he was ignoring me completely and I was standing there waving my hands and squawking impotently.
Normally I make an announcement that I would like the parents to pick up the wandering child, because if a twenty stone man trips over the child, we all know who will be getting up without help. The parents get the message. But I always say this gently, as you don't want to scare the child.

I used to just basically ignore them and they would eventually wander away. That is until a two year old pushed my table over sending all my props (which included a full milk pitcher) all over the stage. Now, I don't ignore them but gently escort them off the stage and into the audience. If they come back, I ask one of the parents to help me out and move them (gently) in their direction.

One time I had a child crawl under my chair suspension and lay down on the seats--but under the table--she then poked her head out from one end. It was a once in a lifetime photo op. I just went with it and had the mom take some pictures. If you just stay loose and flow--and like MagicGeorge says "be funny"--you can make some of these expected happenings--truly fun, unique and magical moments. It's cool if you have a formulaic response that happens to be funny--but sometimes you just gotta be spontaneous--you know what ah mean jelly bean?

When doing my shows I alway hand my helpers a sweet or two. This little chap of about 20 months old saw this and after a few magic tricks came up and stared at me
the parents thought this was hilarious. So I gave him a sweet after asking his mom. then he did it again and again. It didn't ruin the show as I was playing up what he was doing. In the end I put the pan of sweets on the floor so he could just help him self. THis got a big round of applause from the moms. I think about 11 moms came up afterwards and asked for my card. Wouldnt reccomend doing that at every party though lol.

I give the wandering child my business card and say "Here, you go. Please go bring this to your mom." (And they do)

I would usually lead them back to were they are sitting or place them down somewhere if they aren't, by trying to take them by there hand and placing them back down but they usually by the time I can go near them moan and go off as they are shy. Or I say is mum here, which of course they are as if theres a baby here then theres bound to be a brother or sister, then the parent will just nod and go red and take the baby away. If its a kid whos watching my show then I just say SIT DOWN!!! not nasty, but loudly. Never say please sit down because please is a question, SIT DOWN however is not as your telling them straight. Hope this helps!
