I recently had the chance to sit down with Jason England and watch him work, and man is he good!

I've never seen better deal work (it's right up there with Steve Forte) and he is a very clever magic thinker- for instance, he has a great routine where a spectator needs to cut to an ace. If the spectator misses, there's no problem because Jason turns it into an even better effect! (I realize I'm being vague but his solution can be found in his "Jamming with the Fellas" notes, and I don't want to tip it here).

If you are interested in seeing Jason, he will be holding a workshop in Toronto today. Contact me if you want more details!

I'm in my hotel room typing this from my iPod touch. 3 hours to go before Jason and Ben can laugh at my lack of skills!

I had the pleasure of attending Jason's lecture in Baltimore a few days ago. He's the real deal. I picked up everything he had, it was a very wise investment. It was also a joy to meet Ben after chatting to him for a few years here on the Café'. If you have the opportunity to see Jason, don't miss it.

I was there... fantastic time, my jaw dropped at the man's second deal. Unfortunately I had to leave early (which lead to huge complications, but that's another story), but what I was there for was brilliant.

He his not only very good, he is also very knowledgably and smart and a real nice fellow and very helpful, it seems to me, although I have never met him. It’s a real shame he is so ugly. Smile
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Enjoyed the session, it was great. Michael, sorry you missed the end of the workshop. Hopefully you got a copy of his lecture notes. He really fried us with two tricks from that.

Looking forward to seeing Jason again, hopefully next year.

Ben rushed the notes out to me just as James and I were pulling out... good thing too, they're fantastic!

I much rather would have stayed there than be nearly killed on the streets of Downtown Hamilton by a group of drunks... ah well.

Also, as a side note... Jason's "Third Shuffle" principle is devious... I feel guilty using it.

Imagine this... magician's back is turned the entire time, the spectator handles the deck herself. She freely selects a card in the fairest possible manner, loses it in the pack herself, then shuffles and cuts the deck herself, numerous times... all while the magician's back is turned. When he turns back around and spreads the deck face up on the table, he needs no more than a second to instantly and impossibly locate the selection. Brilliant method... I really would have liked to have been been fooled with this before I read it in the notes.

Ok, now you've got me really interested! For those of us who live on the other side of the planet, where may we get a copy of Jason's lecture notes?

I was just getting ready to post that as well. Can you only get his notes by attending a lecture (if so he needs to come to Indiana!) or is there anywhere you can get them online?

I just spoke to Jason and he would be happy to sell you his notes/videos.

For those interested in learning some great material and tools that will help you make your magic that much better, I advise you check out both the bottom deal and second deal notes as well as his "Jamming with the Fellas" notes (ask him about the name- it's a funny story!).

Jason can be reached at jasonengland1971@yahoo.com

Alternatively, you can send me the money directly. I won't send you anything, but I would like to buy the new Buffalo Chicken sandwich from Subway...

His notes "Jammin with the Fellas" are the nuts. The two tricks he performed at the end of the workshop were a riffle stacking demo (stacking 4 aces, spread unevenly in the deck, for 7 hands in one shuffle) and a lie detector routine (fever nails? I think that's the name) with a surprise ending, it worked very well.

The DVD makes a very nice add-on to the workshop, and the bonus is that I'll get Jason's thoughts on the push through shuffle, which we seem to have missed when we went out to get drinks...

Fever Nails is a darn good one too... heck, the entire set of notes has incredible stuff in it... but that Third Shuffle, WOW.

That third shuffle would kill just about any magician's ring meeting or the like. Very clever thinking.

Did you guys work on deals after I left? When I was there, we had not reached that point yet. I did, however, see Jason dealing seconds to the table... blew me away. I nearly spit C-Up all over the table. Too bad I had to leave so early.

We did work on seconds and bottoms. Jason had some interesting thoughts to share on how to practice and evolve the deals. I believe his notes on the deals cover that, although I haven't been through them yet. If you haven't got them and want to start practicing deals, I really recommend buying them from him.

It touched me in a particular way, actually. Back when I started learning the bottom deal, I tracked down a number of sources. I recall trying the Erdnase deals, not being able to push-off the bottom card at all, discarding that idea, working through others, essentially building my deal by running into issues and finding ways around them. I thought about my grip, why I needed to grip this way, what was hanging to the card, how to make it easier on myself, a bunch of things. None of the answers were perfect but I feel it really helped me with that. Jason seemed to be thinking along similar lines, in the way he presented the basic erdnase deal, the modified versions, why they were modified, how that affected the deal, the progression to a mechanic's deal, etc etc.

Not only did I find this close to what I've done in the past (and continue to do), it also applied to the strike deal. As far as learning this one I essentially worked from an end-product, as Jason would say. I had no real evolution. Jason showed us how to start and how to progress, and I found his ideas very insightful. I haven't worked on the strike much and had been working more on my push-offs, which I had started learning and evolving (based off erdnase's first method, then second). Now I'll be working on both.

Both sets of notes on the deals look very interesting. The reference list at the end of each is quite large and is sure to provide a lot of interesting leads.
