I'm getting a guitar and wonder if anyone knows a good way to use one in a manipulation act, or an act in general, because I can't back down on buying it (please don't ask) Smile. It's a red, electric Fender.

Hello

What if you put a flash gun on the back of the neck, and then blast out some angry chords and have balls of fire coming out of it?

The best way to use a guitar in your act is to play it. If you aren't going to play it, why is it there?

Norm Neilsen is famous for his floating violin effect...maybe you could invent some sort of floating system for the guitar. Smile

Tom has hit it on the head. Don’t even think about any hokey use of your guitar as a prop in your magic act. Learn to play the guitar, start a band, and hire a magician to open for you!

Topez, on the World's Greatest Magic, produces a guitar. It looks really cool.

Many years ago, I worked on a routine where I would begin to accompany myself on the guitar. It was a comedy idea about confusion as to whether a magician or musician was hired for the performance.

As I was preparing to sing (which I can't!), I began to cough. Then I pulled yards of paper from my mouth. After the paper was all balled up, a dove was produced from the paper. The guitar provided what was needed to pull this off.

Interesting to think about what you used to do!

Whilst having the guitar on (with a strap), there is a very large load space inbetween you and the guitar. You could play a song, then do a trick, and vice versa. Smile

Maybe you can have a VERY strong wire that is invisible hooked to the ceiling... and then you make it float in mid-air. While it is floating, you play it. To sum this up... you play the guitar while it is floating in mid-air. Smile

Music can be a great addition to a magic act.

Here are a few nearly normal suggestions.

1.Use the guitar to get loads.

I agree it should be played, perhaps you can great a Magic Chord/Scale that indicates something is going to happen. (Assistant coming out...)

2. Use the guitar to do parody songs based on
the season or company hiring you.

3. Multiply the guitar into 2

Here are a couple of suggestions if you have no musical talent, or just plain don't want to play the guitar too much on stage...

1. Come out and start playing something real cool (a song by Santana should be about right), then stop playing, but the msuic doesn't stop (obviously you need a recording, and some guiter skills to make it look like you are playing). You could then turn the guitar around, open the back up and take out a drink to refresh yourself with, put it back and continue playing as if nothing had happened (You would have to hollow out the back of the guitar, but depending on the type this will probably not make a lot of difference to the sound produced if you ever do want to play it - check at your local music shop).

2. If you are doing something more close up how about subbing guitar picks for coins in some of your routines (you would probably need to play a few bars of something to give a reason for the guitar being there).

3. Make a table out of it

OK, time to log off the net, but that may have got some creative juices flowing...

If you want to use the guitar to play some chords *without* learning how to play chords, you can tune it to play E when it is open (tuning for slide guitar).

This way, you can quickly learn a couple of songs to go into your act, without knowing chord patterns, just a finger as a bar.

It will work for a one off, or for a particular part of an act, but as people have already said, the best way is to learn how to play it properly!

James.

Use a different guitar, cut a larger hole from it and use rubber to make the hole look small. Then simply climb throught the hole. Swap the top and voila it looks like you've just walked through your piano... I mean guitar!

Topaz has a reason to produce his guitar....he does a themed act...bells as a musical instrument and the shades...lend themselves to the production on a guitar.

As I have stated before. Whatever you do or produce must have a logic to it...even if the logic is non-sensible.

neilsen's violin floats....his misers dream is a xylophone on a slant.....see the logic? there is a conrectie tissue that makes the violin logical.

you could theme a "part" of your act with musical instruments. A "musical interlude" idea where you do magic with small toy instruments and them produce the real guitar.

it would work.

Hey there guys. I am a guitairst and have been very much contiplating doing an act with one of my guitars. Many of the ideas are such that have come up already. A guitar levitation is big on the list. I want a practical method that can be applied not only to a magic act, but also as a REALLY neat trick that could be used in my band's performances. If anybody has got ANY ideas please do e-mail me at magicofbrian@teleport.com. Thanks! Smile
