They all dope, and everyone knows it. It's not a dirty secret anymore. It's just the way it is.
I stopped watching the Tour the year that Jan Ulrich had to back out at the last minute when he was the favorite to win. And my favorite cyclist--Erik Zabel--was later implicated in EPO allegations. At that point I just gave up watching the sport. It holds no interest for me anymore, though it used to be my second favorite sport. |

Most likely true. Paul Kimmage, an Irish ex-pro cyclist has written extensively about the "cancer" of the sport, as he calls it. Let's say he's not Lance Armstong's greatest fan.

Even if they were all to be doped up to the eyeballs with performance enhancers, it takes great guts to do what they do. Not many of us would want to risk the crashes, or having to pedal as hard as we could going down Alpine hairpin bends, not to mention the saddle sores and worse from just sitting down to do your day job. Those guys are crazy.

They're crazy, talented athletes with extraordinary guts, endurance, skill, and tactical savvy. It's one of the greatest sports in the world.
And one might argue that since all of the real contenders are taking performance enhancing drugs of one sort or the other (how many take anti-asthma medication, for example?), that the playing field is still equal. But is that really what we want for professional sports? |
