Hi guys ... Once more I need your help please ...
As you may know, I'm trying to come up with a research proposal for my psychological research methods MSc dissertation. Trying to develop some focused research questions ... I'm probably going to do something on non-verbal communication - specifically gestures and body language ... So .... If we knew that introverts were better than extraverts at receiving non-verbal messages, or that women were more sensitive to non-verbal communication than men ... or the non-depressed were better than the depressed ... then what good would that be? What applications might be possible? clincial work, education ... but what else? What value is there in knowing the characteristics of those who are good at receiving non-verbal communication versus the characteristics of those who are not? Perhaps it might help recruiting the right people into the right divisions of the police department - so those good at receiving non-verbal communication end up interviewing suspects while those who are not are given other duties, for example (thanks Dreadnoght) Can anyone please add to my very small list of applications? What value could such research be? Yes, I admit I'm getting you guys to write part of the *** thing for me. Don't judge me too harshly! Oh yeah, as requested in another thread, if anybody could please kindly recommend a good academic book on non-verbal communication (more body language/gestures and less facial expressions, clothing, speech intonation or postures) then that would be very much appreciated. Please no pop-psychology! I am becoming more interested in how we receive, perceive and process such messages, rather than studying the 'tells' that may be'leaked'. So I guess that would be a book on social cognition. Anyone? Thanks guys. Olly

The thing is that once this stuff has been processed through academia its virtually useless. For one you cannot isolate one group of people or just one channel of communication. They all work together to influence. As does context and timing.

Thanks MP. But for now can we please avoid debating the merits versus demerits of positivism and the experimental method in psychology? I may come back to discuss that with you later though ...

Energizer,
You requested some resources? Ekman has some books but I'll include a few other types of scholarly resources. Here's a few. The research is vast. There may be some that are more current than these too. You'll have to research that. Burgoon, J.K., Buller, D.B., Granpre, J.R., & Kalbfleisch, P. (1998). Sex differences in presenting and detecting deceptive messages. In D.J. Canary & K. Dindia (Eds.), Sex differences and similarities in communication (pp. 351-372). Manhaw, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. Canary, D. J., & Hause, K. S. (1993). Is there any reason to research sex differences in communication? Communication Quarterly, 41, 129-144. Hall, J. A., Smith LeBeau, L., Gordon Reinoso, J., & Thayer, F. (2001). Status, gender, and nonverbal behavior in candid and posed photographs: A study of conversations between university employees. Sex Roles, 44, 677- 692. DePaulo, B. M., Lindsay, J. J., Malone, B. E., Muhlenbruck, L., Charlton, K., & Cooper, H. (2003). Cues to deception. Psychological Bulletin, 129, 74-112. Frank, M. G., & Ekman, P. (1997). The ability to detect deceit generalizes across different types of high-stake lies. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 72(6), 1429-1439. Not sure if that's what you are looking for. Savels |

Thanks Slim.
That would be great if you would do that. BTW, I've looked around, and I think I've found a really dull book that will help me develop my project proposal further. But any further suggestions from you lot would still be appreciated. Thanks
