Hi Guys
I called my local magic shop to see if I can get your standard assortment pack of Bicycle gaffs and was told that the US playing card company is not longer producing Bicycle gaffs and was the reason why they had none to sell. Can someone substantiate this and for what reasons this is and also is there anywhere I can find an alternative supply of gaffs. Magically Aus |

From what I understand that is not true. Only gaffs that distort the back design of the card will not be made.
Do a search here(I believe it's in Food For Thought) there is thread about this.

About 15 or more years ago that rumor went around and I bought about ten decks of DF, DB; everything they made. At least I'll never run out.

Same here Tabby! I've loaded up on all those "special" cards that I may or may not use in this lifetime and possibly my sons as well!
I reckon if it is true and we see a complete drought I'll be able to supplement my retirement! MMc |

From what I have been told this is true. I went to buy a jumbo bicycle deck and the dealer told me the same thing. I asked here on the Café under the latest and greatest and a lot of people confirmed it. Apparently the bicycle company has been sold.

Jumbo cards apparently have been discontinued, at least for the present.
Gaffs however have not. See this post where I share an email reply to me from USPC on this subject. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......=6096413 |

USPCC do not stock any more double facers, double backers, blank facers or blank backers. They would print them as an order, means, that someone has to order the particular decks and buy all from them so that he is responsible for the storage and selling.

I have heard about the gaffs evidently being discontinued. I don't know if its true or not, but if it is, all I can say is, STOCK UP!

All USPCC has stated is that they will no longer print cards that change the design of the Rider back, or the face of the Ace of Spades, which are both trademarked.
Note this is a stop in change of design to the backs, not a change of color to the backs or a change of design to any card face except the Ace of Spades, all other card faces are fair game. (Read that paragraph again to clearly understand what USPCC themselves have stated they won't print, and all they've stated they won't print). This will directly affect things like Bicycle for Five, the Boris Wild Marked Deck, Ultimate Marked Deck, and other gaffs that require a change to the Rider back design. (USPCC also won't change the case design). It has nothing to do with stopping production of gaffs like double backers, double facers, etc, which will still be produced for those customers ordering them. USPCC has also apparently changed their stocking policy in terms of their willingness to stock in their own warehouse gaffs like double backers and double facers. (note that's an apparent unwillingness to stock them only, not an unwillingness to manufacture them). But they'll still print them for anybody who wants to order them in the appropriate quantity. If Murphy's doesn't order them all in quantity (if they haven't already), then somebody else will for the highly marketable products that they've always been. USPCC did temporarily halt some specialty card lines in and around their factory move, and it's likely that Jumbo's are among those lines halted. Jumbo's may also fall into the same category as the double facers and double backers......USPCC not willing to run them as a factory stocked item, but more than willing to run them for anybody ordering the required minimum number of decks. Note that Jumbo's change neither the design of the Rider back, the face of the Ace of Spades, or the case itself, so other than not wanting to absorb the cost of stocking 10,000-50,000 decks themselves (or whatever their in-house minimum is), USPCC has not in any way indicated that they wouldn't be willing to make them in the future. (They haven't even indicated they wouldn't stock them in the future, only that they're not stocking them right now). All the information above has been posted multiple times here on the Café, unfortunately it's been accompanied by an equal amount of rumor to muddy the waters. USPCC is doing two things, and two things only. They're protecting any and all of their actual trademarks by refusing to perform even the smallest design change to their trade marked designs, and they're streamlining their in-house product stocking policy to reduce their overhead on items that likely sit on their warehouse shelves for a long time between runs (like gaffed and Jumbo playing cards). USPCC seem to be making what many would describe as smart changes to their overall business model, which in light of the current economic climate benefits all who use their products. |

Silverking,
Thank you for your clearly worded summary of the facts! Due to the plethora of conflicting posts by other folks, I, for one, have been somewhat unsure of the actual position of USPCC as regards the production of gaffed cards/decks. Hopefully your post will clarify the matter and help dispel rumors which have inadvertently "muddied" the waters. IMHO USPCC's position makes perfectly good business sense. I am just glad that they currently are willing to manufacture the gaffs that we magi have come to depend on . Angelo |

The only problm Ive noticed with the backs of the DB Bike cards I stocked up on ten years ago is that the blue ink seems to be just a little darker on the newer decks of straight cards but nobody seems to notice but me. The reds are a little lighter on the DF cards too. Could be age but I keep them stored in the cool, dry and dark.

Theres a shortage of gaff decks???
gee... I have bricks and bricks of them in stock... no shortage here. I think many of the dealers are just passing along rumors and cashing in on gullible customers in fear they are on the endangered animal lists. no worries - you'll be able to get your gaffs - you may just need to shop other places ;-)

I ordered two decks of DB'ers from Magicvault two weeks ago. No problems. I got them in a few days.
Thanks for the heads up Mark. I also got some of the perfect envelopes that they sell. Very nice indeed. Perfect for the JOL mini himber. I can finally use my mini himber for Appointment in Samarra. V.

I am looking for a 4 way out wallet. But the only one I found was from UK and very expensive. Anyone can pm me a more affordable one? I am running a little tight on budget in this economy.

Marvin - check out the SNAKE WALLET from Wayne Dobson - much more than a 4 way, so it may work and offer some additional uses.

That is all nice about the stock and wharehouse policy. From that side, it is a smart move.
I just don´t buy the whole concept of copyright about aces and rider backs. It´s just silly. There are probbably millions of rider back Bicycles altered around the world, after decades of magi "messing around" (which means "inventing amazing cool tricks") with the cards. Why stop now? What really happened? Have they been bought? Do they have a new legal team? Can someone explain it to me? |

Have they been bought? Do they have a new legal team? Yes and Yes. Jarden Corporation purchased US Playing Card in 2004, and with that they brought a new legal team. This post gives a response that a Café member received from US Playing card: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......start=32 |

Does this seem like a good price for this deck of gaffs?
