OK,

I just received the "Crystal Silk Cylinder Supreme" I ordered from Marty at Dazzling Magic...

This is an absolutely beautiful Magic prop!!! Marty hand makes these, and it is obvious it is done with great pride & care. I had the Mak Magic version of the "Crystal Silk Cylinder". I had purchased it to use it for transforming 3 orange silks into 3 oranges for the opening of my stage act. There was only one MINOR problem; the load tube was not big enough for oranges!!! I searched several grocery stores in an attempt to find oranges small enough but had no luck. I searched around the internet and found out about Dazzling Magic.

Their "Crystal Silk Cylinder Supreme" is much wider and taller than the MAK Magic version. The load tube is nearly 4 inches in diameter, and that's with the beveled lip which makes it MUCH easier to perform the mechanics of the effect.

Also, I found that no matter how I folded and/or bunched up the silks when I loaded them into the MAK Magic version, over 50% of the time there was some of the silks left "exposed" after the transformation. I have been playing around with Marty's version for several hours this morning and I have not had that problem once. Marty was obviously familiar with the pitfalls of silk cylinder effects and took that into account when designing his version.

On top of all that, it is a simple but beautiful Magic prop. It looks clean & elegant with just the right amount of "dazzle". I cannot recommend this enough to any of you who either have a silk cylinder and don't use it, or to someone who is looking for a silk cylinder. It sells for $149.00 and will cost you $10.00 to ship, but IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY! I have paid a good deal more for props and effects that were nowhere near this quality. As for the shipping, it came EXTREMELY well packed and comes with a drawstring pouch for storing and transporting the effect. Marty, this one is a WINNER!

Hank,

Just curious, how many tubes does Dazzling Magic provide with their Crystal Silk Cylinder? As I recall, MAK Magic, and many other manufacturers, unfortunately seem to provide only one. I have always been bewildered by the fact that most Crystal Silk Cylinders are sold with only one tube. With only one (which contains the load tube) it is impossible to show the tube empty -- a fact which completely eliminates anything "magical" about the effect as where the load came from is patently obvious to any intelligent observer. With two tubes, one of which has a slightly wider diameter than the one containing the load, it is possible to show both tubes empty (and, with proper handling, at almost the same time) so that when the load appears it is "by magic" with no clue as to where it came from.

Am asking only as a matter of curiosity. Don't need to buy it as I have had and used a Crystal Silk Cylinder (with two tubes) for 30+ years.

Dick,

It comes with one tube, however, I had actually purchased the "extra tube" for the MAK Magic version I had. I found the routining of the extra tube to be very unnatural. Why would you have two tubes covering the crystal cylinder instead of one? There was no logic in it to me; the whole process of using the second cover tube seemed to scream that there was something being "covered up".

What I did and will be doing with the new cylinder is have the load tube on a small "holding platform" I designed and built that clips to the shelf of my suitcase table. In the routine, I take off the outside tube and show it empty to the audience. I drop that hand down to my side as I pick up the crystal cylinder, holding it up and pointing it to the audience to show it completely empty and "normal" as well. In the process of doing that, I grab the load tube inside of the cover tube from the platform and very naturally bring the cover tube up and rest it on the table as I finish up displaying the crystal cylinder. This is a very natural and "fair" display of both the cover tube and the crystal cylinder and it leaves me loaded and ready for the transformation.

To the audience, I have just shown them the tube empty, the cylinder empty, placed the tube over the cylinder and performed the transformation. To me, that is much cleaner and more natural looking than having two cover tubes. I'm not sure if my description is clear enough, I hope you can understand the routining I'm able to use thanks to having the load tube behind the table and out of sight, waiting for loading into the cover tube.

Thanks,
Hank

Jlevey,

As I indicated above, it sells for $149.00 and is worth every penny! You can choose from several colors for the cover tube as well.

Thanks,

I agree about the two tubes; I think it is running without being chased and only arouses suspicion. It would be like doing a Dove Pan with two lids.

You don't have two lids for your dove pan?

How do you pass the lid for examination?

Hank,

Your method does obviate the need for the second tube (although it necessitated your making the "holding tray" you described). The handling of the two tubes is difficult to describe in writing but has proven both successful and above suspicion in thousands of performances over 30+ years. Suffice it to say that it is completely natural, allows both tubes to be shown empty almost simultaneously (i.e., within milli-seconds of each other). The large tube is picked up and displayed as the smaller one is picked up and immediately passed through the larger one and displayed then (without either tube being put down) placed over the crystal cylinder followed immediately by the large tube -- a clap of the hands and the large tube is removed, followed immediately by the smaller tube and the load is revealed. The entire process takes less than 10 seconds and the tubes are never put down or even partially out of sight. If you saw it done that way, I'm confident that you would be a convert to the 2 tube method. But, having said that, to each his own.

Dick,

From our previous private email conversations, I know that you bring several decades of real world professional experience to the table. It sounds like you have worked out a very smooth and clean method for using the extra cover tube. For me and my style, I found that using the load tube perch I described works really well for me. I love being able to show the cover tube, show the crystal cylinder and going right into the transormation. The tray I made was pretty quick & easy to make. If you ever have the opportunity to video tape your handling of the two cover tubes, I would be very interested in seeing it performed that way.

Thanks,
Hank
