I'm working on putting together a new show, but I've been out of the loop for the last couple of years working on other projects. I'm interested on everyone's opinion on what they think the best things to come out of the last year or two are. I need to catch up and put some new stuff in my show! I have a couple of new effects which I really like, but based on traditional stuff.

It's really hard to say, it depends what sort of show it is. Like I always say it's best to work backwards. Come up with the desired effect and then come up with a method or buy an existing one. If you rephrase your question into something like "How can I tell what name a person is thinking of?", it will be easier to reference some materials for you to obtain. If you can't think of any effect, go watch Harry Potter, Heroes, or any other fiction that will fire up your imagination!

Jonathan,
What are your interests? What message do you want to give to your audience? What are your powers? Do you portray yourself or another character? What is your performance style (ie. Assertive, comedic, etc.)? -rob |

Most audiences haven't seen the "old" stuff yet...
The quest for new material is fine if the search is focused on finding what fits your character and your show, but new material for the sake of newness... that's not going to improve your show. I realize that we are all sluts for secrets, but let's step back and take some time to refine what we already know.

I disagree. Sure the old stuff is fine. But, inspiration has always made my shows better! It's exciting to see what new advances have been made in the art. There's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't have to necessarily be new "secrets" but a new twist that gets your mind thinking in all new ways!
This thread is for all of us who might have been out of the loop for a while and need to catch up. That way at least we'll know what people are talking about! Plus it's fun and it's the new things that inspire and excite us about the art. Nothing wrong with that Now that we have that all out of the way. What are some of the best things, in your individual opinions, to come out the last year or two? (effects, DVD's, books...) Doesn't matter if it fits me or not, this thread isn't just for me. Thanks guys! |

Nothing wrong with being excited about advances in the field, but after being out of the loop for a couple years, the best bet is to revisit the basics and perfect them. Most professional performers that I know don't make their show great by adding new things to it all the time. Many use the same effects for 20 years or more... absolutely perfecting every single nuance. If you can't be inspired re-visiting Annemann, Corinda, Hoy, Waters, et. al... then you probably won't be inspired by the newer stuff either.
