I am wanting to know what kind of oil everybody uses on their padlocks? I have bought a few locks and know I will need to oil them in the near future and just wanted to know if one oil was better than the other. any help would be great. thanks

Graphite works well for locks.

There are aerosol spray containers of graphite lubricant available.

Can I purchase the aerosol spray container of graphite at wal-mart?

Possibly. If not try Lowe's.
That reminds me, I should track down a container myself.

I was once told that its easies to take a "compact graphite storage device" and extract small amounts of graphite as needed by using an abrasive paper to release the graphite form the "compact graphite storage device" then blow it in to the lock to lubricate.
Or in laymen’s terms - rub a pencil on bit of sand paper! That was from a VERY talented locksmith and magician (did I get that right Mick? The very talented bit not the pencil bit) |

Well, Ken, that's where you told me you got them from!
I have been using the pencil/sandpaper technique for years now, and Dave was right, it was me who told him, and my dad who told me over 40 years ago. You can get powdered graphite from Locksmith supplies, and it's good as it doesn't leave a residue. But make sure you don't put too much in the lock, because any excess gets pushed to the back of he cylinder and with constant use will compresss and compact, causing possible future problems. Mick |

Would you recommend using graphite for handcuffs as well?
|
Mick Hanzlik Special user Mick Hanzlik 588 Posts |
Don't see why not. Although the tolerances in padlocks and security locks are usually much tighter that in handcuff locks. In other words, there is much more space between the moving parts in most handcuffs, so it is not to important.
The biggest problem I have found in older locks that have been lubricated with thick oil or grease, is that over the years this has thickened into a messy jelly, which is doing the opposite of lubricating. Add dust or dirt to this mess and you then get something that starts to clog the mechanism. This then needs washing out with a de-greasing solvent. Then graphite or a thin oil, such as WD40 etc, can be used but sparingly. Hope this helps Mick |

No length dosn`t matter,,,,,its the way you use it that counts !!! Was told this by a good (Bad) Woman, years ago.

Here is the best stuff to use. Been using this for years on locks and cuffs especially those used in underwater escapes.
