This is in response to Geraint Clarke’s recent eBook “Devious.” While browsing its contents several items caught my attention—namely the sleight that Mr. Clarke refers to as “Accapello.” Unfortunately, Mr. Clarke has inadvertently reinvented my “Tap Illusion” as published in 1995 in Steve Beam’s superb close-up magazine The Trap Door (ref. page 1023). Furthermore, the application of the “Tap Illusion” to create an instant sandwich (which Mr. Clarke refers to as “Accapello,” was also detailed in the same issue of The Trap Door (ref. Bologna Sandwich, page 1031).
Additionally, the use of a protruding double lift, which Geraint’s applied to “Accapello,” was described in the aforementioned issue under the title “Tap Illusion Feint.” Furthermore, Mr. Clarke’s “Accapello Depth Steal,” as well as the concept of controlling the stolen card to the bottom of the deck was also described The Trap Door (ref.”Taps,” page 1037). Enough said! |

I remember working on Tom's "Tap Illusion", when it first appeared in The Trapdoor. A buddy I use to hang out with at the local magic shop played with this for hours. Tom, would love to see more of your work published.

First off I'd like to bring your attention to "inadvertently"
Meaning without knowledge or intention. From your tone in the post, it suggests an implication of theft ? It may be the same, I have no idea, I have never heard of Tom, and through my 2 years extensive research on this move, have never come across anyone with a move such as this, and neither have my peers. Also, after I found out that it may be the same, I email'd Mr Beam in order to get the issue in which it appears. As Tom has brought to my attention, he is convinced he published this first in 1995....... when I was a meer 5 years old. Subsequently, it was another 11 years time before I took an interest in magic. I honestly guarantee that I have not stolen the content of this magazine, and it was what I believed to be an original concept thought up by myself. With a few thousand years of magic history, its not uncommon that two magicians will think of the same sleight, effect or concept. Cheers, Geraint |

It doesn't suggest an implication of theft. Tom simply informed you that the move was invented before you came up with it. Happens all the time bro.

It pays to do research... had you demo'd the move on the Café and asked for references, I'm pretty sure myself, someone or Tom himself would have replied with the original source.
If my math is correct, this puts you at 19 yrs old with only 3 years in magic. Perhaps you should be checking with more than just your peers for referencing before publishing "new" work. -daegs |

I sent the book round, or performed this control for most the top names in the business today, none of which could place its origins or were aware of the method. And your maths is correct ! Oh and that's not a bad idea to be honest Daegs, to preview my work here..... as you may be aware though, registration for this forum has been down for a while, and new registrants have only been accepted after the release date of my e-book.
Anyway, I'm sure Tom and myself can come to some sort of arrangement. |

Hi Ben,
Joshua Jay Daniel Garcia Dan and Dave Buck Greg Wilson Jon Armstrong Jeff McBride, to name but a few ........ These seem to be the most respected performers and magicians in the current magic scene |

Geraint,
It's great that you tried to do research this way, but did you tell these guys specifically that you wanted to put your ideas in print? To be fair, these guys may be great performers, but even they get more knowledgeable guys to help them research. Remember, just because you do great magic doesn't mean you necessarily know what's out there. Max Maven, Wesley James, David Michael Evans and Stephen Minch immediately come to min as guys who know a lot of what's out there. And since we're talking card magic, Tyler Wilson knows his stuff pretty well too (I know for a fact that Josh Jay sometimes refers to Tyler for help in these matters). Also, though it may have originally appeared in print over a decade ago, I first saw Tom do it at a 52 convention only about 5 years ago. And he's certainly also been doing it around since then. In the end, you may have done some research, but in the future, you now know you're going to have to do more. People make mistakes. What decides our character is how we deal with them. Best, Derrick |
