A buddy of mine came back from the SAM convention (unfortunately, I couldn't make it) and told me that while he was there, he picked up the best comedy line he had ever heard, one that would be a reputation maker. When I asked him what it was he said "I am not going tell you." I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have helped this guy out with new material.
Would anyone who went to the convention have any idea about this reputation making line and would they be willing to let me in on it? It would really get under his skin if I came at him one day and dropped the line in his lap. Thank you, Jered

The best line was ..."i'm your real father" lol.....use that one guys!
actually it was a challenge to go into the dealer room 20 minutes before the close up show and start picking stuff off the shelves to put on a 12 minute show sandwiched between garret thomas and marc oberon.....but I felt a little better on saturday when I had my table....that was fun.... koz |

The way this guy was talking, this "line" is a revolutionary, reputation making, audience killer; of course, what makes a line great for one person vice another is subjective.
Anyway, thanks for the help. From what I have been hearing, the convention was awesome. J

The best setup to the best line was "Who's your Daddy?" printed on one registrants name badge. Ask me at Magic Live, TAOM, or Magic in the Rockies, and I'll tell you the punch line.

Koz's daddy line was great- he also did a great close up show with no time to prepare and following Garrett. Kudos Kozmo

DP: BINGO!! I thought the same thing. People are always in such a rush to "BORROW" from others that they forget to ask permission in the first place.

Davidpaul$,
I agree with your comments. I haven't actually thought about the line in a while. It may have been a case of him just trying to get a rise out of me...who knows. However, in his defense (and anyone else who has ever used someone elses line), I don't think he would have used it word for word. He would have changed it to fit his personality/show/attitude. Let's face it, people have been refurbishing other people's lines since the first caveman said, "pull my finger" (although that line hasn't really changed much at all). I am not saying it makes it right, it just makes it the way it is. Just ask Henny Youngman. Thanks, Jered

In defense of Henny Youngman, yes he was old school, but he WAS an original, and plenty have "borrowed" from him.
You may be confusing him with Milton Berle, who had a reputation of "borrowing" other people's material. But Henny, no. Bottom line, it should be avoided. I've ended up on cruise ships, following other acts who have "borrowed" from ME, and I end up looking like the one who stole it from THEM!
