HI all,
I rarely post a puzzle without having a full solution. this one is annoying me for a few days. I have some insights but only got 'an ugly formula' as solution, which I FEEL could/should be simplified by an argument I don't yet have. here goes: 100 people boarding a plane. each in line and in order - i.e. person #1 has a ticket for seat #1, followed by #2 who has a ticket for seat #2 etc. up to you in place #100. person #1 is the crazy grandma. instead of sitting in her place, she sits in a random place. each passenger thereafter, if he sees his seat empty he takes it, otherwise he takes a random seat. what are the chances that you (the last) will find your seat free? what if the people are not boarding the plane in order? ND have a go at this one, and if you find a neat answer PM me. |

I missed the "what if the people are not boarding the plane in order?". That one sounds harder.

Tomas, slayed the grandma or at least the puzzle. he found a beautiful and easy solution! which makes this puzzle very elegant!
I was dumb to try to calculate it in a very "ugly" way - all cheers go to Tomas... I will go bang my head in a wall for a while now... |

To be clear, I have not solved the second question yet.

After discussing with Tomas we agreed on two different variants of interest.
easy - the REST of the people board in random (among them the grandma and you are last hard - total random boarding the hard variant has no solution (yet) |

I finally got the hard one. It was easy to find a messy expression for it but it took me two days to clean it up. Will post a solution once others have a go at it.

Did it have to be a grandma? Did she have to be "crazy"? This is unkind.
I'm as real as you think I am

I think you meant Stan Alger. That guy has an IQ well over 400.
I've not found the femole at: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......m=101&18 I didn't see the incredible amount of info the spy could send by just flipping a single bit: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=101 I never saw a good strategy for the casino game: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=101 And a bunch more. The common denominator is someone named Nir. Thanks Gary! /Tomas |

Thanks for the compliment Tomas. But you are by far more clever than me - I just ask the questions here...
and btw you were right Stan needs to take two IQ tests together cause one doesn't have enough points in it, for him to get his real score... N |

I happen to know that Nir solves the puzzles himself before posting them. So there.
