I posted something over on the Yahoo sideshow group and I am going to post it here as well. What John Robinson just posted here supports my position. And Sideshows by the Seashore has also been deluged with negative calls and emails. By the way, the John mentioned below is John Strong and not John Robinson:
It is a no win situation. Geo. M. Cohan stated that there is no such thing as bad publicity, but that is a lie. The media is very biased. They have to tell a story and the story they are telling this time is a rehash of the old inaccurate Elephant Man tale: A poor helpless creature is being saved from abuse and exploitation in a freakshow by some noble do-gooder. It is amazing that no one in the media is pointing up the fact that the dog owner broke a contract. And John is being painted as a villian. He has been judged by the media and in doing so they have also painted with broad stroked an image of the sideshow industry as something negative. The problem is that this story falls under the catergory of human interest and since it doesn't really impact the lives of the public at large, there is no depth in the reporting. No one is really investigating all sides of this story. It is just easier to go with the story angle as it has been reported. Members of the media might be calling and wanting to do interviews, but they won't want to change the slant of it all. It is ultimately a small story and not worth their time to get it right. (And as for exploitation, someone got paid for those pictures of the dog. And who else is making a buck off of the dog?) And the problem is that people will be outraged at John (and the whole sideshow industry by association), and what do people do when they are outraged? They protest and/or look to the government to "do something about this". That makes it a nuisance for the police and others in charge. That's when pressure is applied and life gets tough, even though the parties being lean upon did nothing wrong. It will bring attention to John (and the rest of the industry) that might make an extra quick buck, but it is heat and no real good will come of it. Todd |

The irony of another situation is that those elephant handlers at Ringling use the same technique that Cesar Milan uses on dogs. The difference is that Cesar is a hero and those guys are "abusers". Funny the way the media works. |

I received this question a few years ago, at that time I posted it with my responce on Sideshow World.
Thought you may find it interesting. Enjoy John the "Knuckle Dragger" Robinson Sideshow World Concerns for the 6 Legged Calf I am writing to you out of concern for the 6 legged calf which you recently purchased for your "freak show." I personally find it offensive and outrageous that shows like yours, which put unfortunate animals on display for profit, are still inexistence. It's proof that we have a whole lot more evolving to do, as a species, that you can still make a quick buck from people who are interested in seeing things like this. If humans want to go on exhibit, and pound nails through their tongues, ok. But the animals in your show were not given a choice, and it's downright despicable to use them like you are. That calf deserves humane treatment, and should have the extra legs amputated so that he can live a healthy, relatively normal life. Having six legs does not make him special--it just makes his life harder. How would you like to lug around two useless appendages for a lifetime? Don't you guys have a heart? Please, consider taking pictures of the calf the way he is now, and then helping the little guy out by having the legs removed. A whole lot of people would think better of you for it. Sincerely, SW Hsu -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi SW Hsu, First let me put your mind at ease, I'm not the one who bought the 6 legged calf. It was a misprint in the article. Second if a showman had purchased the calf it would live a better life than becoming meat for your table. The animals that are exhibited on the Midways of America are very well taken care of. They have the best health care, eat a well balanced diet and are loved by their care gives. Sure they are exhibited for a profit, but a lot of animals are. Zoos, Movie Production Companies, etc, etc, use animals for show. Animal preserves and Zoos work hard to keep some species from going extinct. Others who use animals for profit, uses them for meat, clothing, bi-products for all kind of consumables. So may I suggest to you visit a show that exhibits animals, freak and others, talk with their care givers ask the same questions you've ask here. I know you will find their owners loving and take very good care of them. That their health and other needs are met. I thank you for your concerns, The little 6 legged calf, without the other two appendages, may have ended up on a bun. Now it will have a life time of fame and fortune in Show Business. Just got off the phone with a reporter from the New York Times,
Spent about an hour trying to give her some info about what really goes on with the animals and how well they are taken care of. She sounded like she is going to try and cover both sides. We shall see, Everyone and their news agencies are trying to get in on the five legged dog. Exploitation or what. It will be interesting to see how they spin my conversation!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After working in the Elephant Business for most of my Carreer...I am well versed in the Media and AR groups as far as animals...When this story of JS and the 5-legged dog Broke...I knew nothing Good would come from it...JS made a mistake when he even let it out he was purchasing a 5-legged dog...He should of just paid for the dog when he picked it up and ran with it Low Keyed...especialy since I know his tract record with Animals...However he didn't, Why one might ask, because he craves Publicity and wanted to show Todd Ray he too had a 5-legged Dog and could gather Media attention on par in his little Brain like Todd did with The Dog Whisperer...Well now that he has threatened to sue in the News...I expect Everyone with SS Animals to recieve visits from the USDA and be inspected due to pressure from the AR...The SS has pretty much run under the Radar as far as the AR is concerned..Until Now...Dogs and cats hit a strong chord with most Folks...that is why I will never show a live one unless I display it in the trailer I described in a previous post...Cows and sheep are primarily "Food and Fiber" production animals and it is a strong argument that if they were not with the Sideshow they would of ended up for Dog food...I spend a great deal of Money on my animals as far as Pens, Hay , Food, Vets, Ect. The BCS also keeps USDA paperwork just like I did for Elephants my Permit Book and Record keeping fills a large 3 ring Binder...and Ihave Health Certificates on Hand from the last 3 years...even tho the AWA/USDA Handbook states "the Industry Standard for Farm animals is all that is Required"..I Hope JS has gone the extra mile, However I have Doubts...One reason I switched from Elephants to the Sideshow was cause it really grew old waking up in the Morning "Being made to feel like I was a Criminal" not to mention having to spend untold Thousands of Dollars on frivolous Lawsuits to defend my profession...Hopefully this Blows over...As I have niether the time or money to re-live new Battles with the AR and Mainstream Media, not to mention I'm getting old and running out of options as far as a Lively Hood...and I thought Keeping JS penned up in Coney would be Good....Silly Me....

I've never heard of the AR people trying to change the diet of China. They eat dogs there. And tiger parts, which fuels the decline of the species.

AR news sells...and the AR loves their name in the News...translating into BIG Donations....The "Plight of the Elephant" raises more $$$ for PETA and like groups, than ALL other species COMBINED!...Mainly, because Circuses do not have a lot of money and No National orginazation to Fight against the Millions PETA has...The SS is a even looser knit group...I don't believe the SS will overtake The Elephant in Donations...But I do Believe they (AR) will milk it for every last cent they can...and the Media in the Good Ole USA is into 'Makin Money" not nessasarily Reporting Truthfull News....The really Sad part is that JS#3 is most likely enjoying all this attention, Rather than realising the potential Harm this could cause..."The Whisperer" with Todd Ray was a HUGE positive...Now we see the opposite with "The Buffoon".....
