Can anyone recommend an Internet resource for hats, one they have had some experience with. After a web search I found numerous providers but it’s hard to tell the quality from a web site photo.
Thanks, Steve |

Thanks, I found Gentleman’s Emporium as well. Have you had any experience with their hats?

I bought my tophat from:
http://www.top-hats.com/tophatpage.htm The hat is decent quality, fairly heavy felt and lined. I have worn it for many performances and it has held up and looks great. They shipped it promptly and there were no issues with the order. The other alternative is to buy antique hats on eBay. My friend got a very high quality tophat from the late 1800's at a fair price on eBay. It takes some patience to find the style, quality and size you want.

I have purchased a variety of items from Gentleman's Emporium (but no hats) and have never been disappointed by their quality or customer service. They stand behind heir sale and accept returns if needed.

Steve, you'll also want to check out Dirty Billy's in Gettysburg, PA. http://www.dirtybillyshats.com/
They make authentic period headgear from the original molds and materials. My favorite bowlers and gambler's hats come from them. Top notch hats and great service. You might also try Wild West Mercantile ( http://www.wwmerc.com ), also a Gettysburg merchant. I buy my period vests and frock coats from them and have never been disappointed. They have a nice selection of 19th century hats.

I'm a bit late but here are a few more resources for the discerning period performer.
In addition to Dirty Billy, there is also TP&H Trading Co. (Tim Bender) and Clearwater Hats for period hats. Among Civil War reenactors, all three are known and respected for their quality. These guys produce real hats, true to the period with lining and edging, etc. (not your run of the mill cheapo stage costumes type of hats). TP&H Trading Col (Tim Bender) Clearwater Hats Also check out Corner Clothiers for made to order custom made period fashion. |
