Really?!? No one? OK let me rephrase the question... How do you clean your sponge balls (clean enough to put in your mouth.)

Well....I just washed some sponge items for a show tomorrow. They always seem to get scrunched when I am packing out at the end of the show, so they need "refluffing" before the next show. All I ever do is just hold them under running water, squeeze out the excess, and they are fluffed up like new. I would supposed you could use some hand soap with this. The problem might be that the dye in the sponge might come out more than with normal rinsing. I always see a little bit of dye in the sink when rinsing them with water. Not sure if soap would make that worse. Never tried it, but then I don't put my sponge props in my mouth !

I've heard you should boil them. Although, I admit, I have never tried it- it does seem like a sure fire way to really clean them.

So far I've been letting them soak in a bit of mouthwash and water. When rinsing them I do see a bit of red dye coming out...but those things must be a bacterial haven and if I'm gonna be putting them in my mouth I'd like them to be cleaner than...well...my mouth.

I think antibacterial handsoap would probably do the trick.
Follow the same rule as they teach kids at school (hey, that's poetic !). Wash them while singing the alphabet song or happy birthday. In other words, for about 30 seconds. This gives the soap time to kill the germs. Just rinse them really well afterwards, unless you like the taste of soap ! :) Mark

The fine and exact answer. Video is better than any long stories.

AMEN ! Having experienced the magic of Chris Lyle at his house gig, I know he is not kidding when he says his sponge balls get a workout every week. This is a great video, and pretty much backs up everything I said earlier. The Purell idea was new to me, though. Very cool. Something tells me the link to this video needs to have a sticky bun icon and stay at the top of one of the sections on this forum....

If I was you then I wouldnt do it, they absolutely stink after they have been in the human mouth afterwards and a few days when I looked back they had black spots on them as if they were growing mould!!!!!!! I washed them and it came off, but now they smell even worse, when I was washing them the water turned dark as if the were filthy, I wasnt in a show I was at home trying it out, if I was you I would keep away from the 'sponge snack'!!! Lol.
Kind regards, Nick |
