The Devil's Bride would be a tough thing to pull off live. I had one through my teenage years (and still have the "Gates of Hell", i.e. hinged glass panels). Because of the method/principle involved, the three urns and hinged panels have to be perfectly placed. They are too large to mount on a rolling base, so it would have to be stationary on the stage. Also, there really is a lot of fire when all three urns are lit, which would be an issue with many of today's codes. But the illusion (literally) is perfect. It will fool you while you do the trick. By the Mak plans, the urns are not large enough diameter to give the illusion of the girl engulfed in flames. It tends to look more like a girl sitting crosslegged with a torch in her lap. That can be fixed by simply making larger diameter urns. Also, the original ad in the catalog stated that it can be done on a gym floor with no backdrop. That is not even close to possible as it uses a black art vanish, totally dependant on a black backdrop. I never did see how they thought the statement about gym floors and no backdrops was possible. Overall, very impractical and needs to be built a little differently, but one of the most perfect visual illusions you will ever see! I always thought it had great potential, though. The only thing we ever did with mine as a teenager is play with it on the carport, video one rehearsal performance (which I would love to find), and talk about how awesome it would be to do in a real show! The remnants now remain in a spider web infested corner of my shop.

Lol... this is really taking me back. I actually had a Brock's Block when I was a kid (..it was one of my "BIG" tricks!) I also tried the Gates of Hell as well and you're totally right about the flaming crotch look. I aways wanted to do that right but alas it never came to be.
Thanks for the great memories!

I actually did the Devils Bride Illusion in my Illusion Show for quite a while about 30 years ago. It's a pretty cool illusion and actually work better under full lighting or outside. It took me a little while to discover this. We added a switch to the routine to make it a little more interesting. We called or version "The Legend Of Princess Leah".
I think I have a video of us performing it at the 1981 Illinois State Fair. It is sort of dark. After watching the video we increased the stage lighting for the rest of the run. If I can find it I'll post it. |

And another little gem I've never seen .. the Visible Vampire. What a neat little effect. I've got the Abbott's version .. I think it's simply called Vampire Block.
Thanks for posting that .. Steve |

I dug up the video of the Devil's Bride Illusion and the lighting is so poor (really dark) it's not worth posting. Plus the video quality really sucks. VHS was in it's infancy plus the tape was 25 years old before we converted it to DVD.
Sorry Rocky |

The UF GRANT DVD set is worth every penny! Loaded with information and old video footage! It wasn't too long ago that most people turned their noses up at many MAK items. Now they are becoming collectables. I too would love to own a BELLY BUSTER if anyone knows of one for sale.

Does anyone have the instruction sheet for Brocks Block? I have borrowed one, for some reason there is a witch on two sides of the block and not sure I understand the order of doing things. That is, If you make the block drop with the two plates installed you hve to remove the top plate for it to move any further. but visual is that the block is resting on the the second plate however he block has not cleared the top plate to just slide it out. You have to pull it out of the block so to speak.
Then with the bottom plate it will penetrate and not go all the way to the base leaving a black air space. In the Grant DVD they also show a slide of it not fully down. I do not think the narrator recalled the trick correctly since he makes an excuse for this. The only thing that seems to be the correct illusion is th sword penetration. BTW does this effect have any value? What is it worth since I am borrowing it to use and want to know how careful to be with it. |
