When I read the title, Americas Got Talent, "That was all just a scam," I was thinking you where claiming that the show was a scam. You are quoting one of the judges who claimed the act was "all just a scam."
Mr. Rook, I was not able to watch the episode you were in. However, altho Ricky James is a brilliant magician his selection of tricks were very poor. To be honest, a bullet catch is an exciting trick but may have been better for your second appearance or perhaps for the finals. The trick takes up a lot of time, has a light speed finish, but does it build to a climax? BTW, this is not intended to offend, I would not have may it anywhere near as far as you did on the show. For that I must say, well done.

I think the scam aspect was perhaps that the claim of "actually catching it in the teeth" was not flying... similar to juggling cigar boxes that are glued together... or catching a ping pong ball on your nose using glue...
Not endorsing what happend, just trying to help understand it better. If you had tossed up popcorn first and caught it in your mouth, then an m&m from 10 feet etc etc perhaps they may have believed you really are the guy that could catch a high velocity paint ball ?!! I remember a guy that could catch hard boiled egges thrown at him from 50 feet away ! save time at a deli with a loooong line... aaahhhhh TV. best Gerard
Well then...

I honestly believe to make it AGT you have to be a "Singing--Dancing--Magician". Unfortunately all these shows end up being "American Idol". I got so bored with the acts I saw (not the magic acts) that I hardly watch it anymore. I'd like to audition and when they tell me to go home I'd say ok---and then turn and hand them their watches and wallets back! Now that would get them.

Talent contests have been going on in one form or another for a long time. They have to have variety or else their shows are boring. Back in the 60s I did a Chinese fire eating act the included a super X levi and the sacrificial head cremation. When I went for the first audition, they liked my act. Then they told me what they wanted. They were willing to pay me to be one of the acts, but I would never win or come in second or third. Singers usually alway won. I was there to provide the necessary variety for the show. I did this for this "talent show" 5 or 6 times. I had lots of fun at the time knowing I was the only "paid" act on the show, as the rest did it for nothing, hoping to win and become FAMOUS!
Do you really think those really stupid acts on AGT got on national TV with their acts??? Did you ever hear of writers and actors? Those dumb, stupid acts are scripted and actors hired very similar to what I did 40 some years ago!!!!!!!!!!! Merl Hamen

That's interesting Merl.
You know, on shows like AGT and American Idol, I'd often question how someone could be so disillusioned as to think that they are great, when in fact they are horrible. In reality, I don't think that hardly ever happens. Humans are not very kind to each other - the different kids are picked on, people mock what is different or not "cool", etc. It seems like there's never a shortage of people telling you you're no good if there's any flaw to be seen. This results in most people believing they are not as good as they actually are. So the anomaly of someone who is absolutely terrible thinking they are the best - it makes a lot of sense that they are paid actors. An example that seems obvious from AGT is that choir teacher guy - who's singing turned out to be screeching. Not only would someone like that never get to be a choir director, but Piers seemed to be too prepared with his jokes as well. |

I know several people on the current show that have this problem. They are considered a joke in the industry but steadfastly believe in their own greatness. This delusional thinking is reinforced by the show producers and talent coordinators who are using them for ridicule at their own expense. I always find it funny when the judges on these shows blast the contestants for wasting their time by being so bad. In fact, every "bad" act was specifically cast for that very reason to provide humor and contrast for the good acts they intend to put through. The talent coordinators can spot the delusional acts a mile a way and know they have struck gold. These are people who have a support structure of family and friends around them who have told them how great they were for years, so they believe it to feed a dwindling ego crushed down by other forces. Is it wrong? Not to the producers who have capitalized on schadenfreude to hold an audience. It is the same thing that draws the middle and lower class to soap operas. We want to feel better about ourselves by watching others fail. In the case of this show, there is a huge supply of acts to fill that position, why pay writers and actors?

Funny how the AGT threads have changed, only a month or two ago when it was suggested by someone that the contest was highly orchestrated at least one so-called magic authority called that opinion "misinformed" wonder what he has to say now?

Well... I DO believe it is highly orchestrated to the degree you can frame one's "reality" to steer it towards an outcome. Do they "cheat"? Of course it depends on your definition but I think it's like saying "Do casinos cheat?" Of course not, they don't need to... the odds are already on their side. It's the same on these shows. They don't need to cheat because they don't really care about the outcome as long as viewer's tune in.
The revenue stream is created by the sponsors buying time that yields a certain number of "impressions" for their dollar. They just create the framework by careful "casting" then they can blame the final outcome on the American audience that voted. It's actually an interesting model that has been developed over the past 10 years and is obviously successful due to the number if copies on the air. The entire "voting" concept gives the home viewer ownership of the show by giving them an apparent voice in the shows development. Then you have to tune in to see how "your" participant did in relation to the others like a horse race. Do the producers manipulate the participants, the situations and what they choose to air? Of course. Do they need to fabricate "bad acts"? Nope, there are plenty ready to step up for their 90 seconds of potential fame.
