Years ago in film school I created some effects for a film using the same principal. It was created by a German filmmaker and is called a "Shufftan Shot." I have done the effect with a partially silvered mirror HOWEVER I have successfully achieved the same effect with just a normal piece of glass. I think you will be able to do the effect with just a normal piece of glass. It may require a bit more light on the "ghost" but in my first hand experience the glass works just as well.

Indeed, the blue room is far more complicated than the pepper`s ghost. I do have the plans on a book my father left me...

By the way, is the treatment of the mirros of the blue room the same as on the invisible man by robert harbin? I may attempt to build the cabinet...! I was told that the no cabinet version does not work at all...! Strange, since on the book, the author claimed that he built a small version of it and said it worked like a charm!

One of the popular forms of this illusion was the "Girl to Gorilla" Illusion. It toured with several different side shows and had one strong advantage over other carnival illusions. Where you have a static setup, the amount of money you can take in is very much dependent on how quickly you can clear the tent after the attraction has been displayed. The great visual of seeing the beautiful young girl morph into a gorilla is very powerful. But then the Gorilla would start to pound on the front door of his "cage." Suddenly he would force the door open and jump out into the seating area with loud growls and snarls. The spectators would make a very hasty retreat to escape from the perceived danger. And the next group of spectators could then be quickly ushered in to begin the next performance.

For years they had this "Girl to Gorilla" illusion working in the Arcade area of the Circus Circus Casino in Las Vegas. (And possibly at the Reno Circus Circus as well.)

I will close by repeating the good advice above. If you've never made a Pepper's Ghost or Blue Room, you need to get with informed people. This would certainly include Mike Caveney, Tina Lenert, Jim Steinmeyer and John Gaughan.

From the above comments, not Mr. Loomis's, but farther up the page, it seems that some think it is just a piece of glass that is made into a mirror. If they would read the Genii article on the creation of the "Blue Room", the glass is specially made as well, to create the gradual disappearance effect. It is not a matter of just going out an buying a huge window pane of glass and turning it into a mirror. It is much more ...

I don't know what "Pepper's Ghost" is, it was not part of the article in Genii.

But before any of this is even thought of, you need to build a Parlour Room in a house. This is not really meant to be presented on a stage in a theater. Although, they have kinda with the showing and the television show, but it was then torn down.

To Bill Hegbli,
Do you remember the ghosts flying around in the air in the Disney Haunted House ride? That a Pepper's Ghost illusion. The Girl to Gorilla used the same 45 degree angled glass set up, but with a cross fading of the lights from the Girl to the Gorilla. The Ed and Joy Wilcox Centrifuge Illusion used the same cross fading of the lights to change from a view of an empty compartment to one with a person in it. The person just faded into view magically and then exited through a side door.

Dennis I think you will find the disney haunted house does not use 45 degree glass as the ghosts are placed below and above the levels of the show ride system in recessed areas reflecting onto vertical glass. The one detail that was overlooked was the ghost reflection couples dancers revolving in the wrong direction.

To Nat Magic,
You're right, the angle may not be 45 degrees. Reflections, like pool balls bouncing off a cushion follows the principal that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. However I think that it's still the Peppers Ghost principal.

I haven't seen that ride in a lot of years and I must confess that I don't get your point about the dancing couples. Are they doing a kind of dance which prescribes revolving in a particular direction?

When it first opened they forget to revolve the ghost dancers in the opposite direction so the ghost apparition reflections were revolving in the correct direction (its a dance thing) . Its just a cute story attached to the haunted mansion peppers ghost

About 25 years ago, I trouped with a GIRL TO GORILLA show for most of a summer season. Dennis Loomis understands! To make money with this kind of show, it's necessary to move 'em in, do it, and move 'em out. The only "weak spot" is that there really is no way to get any "inside money'. I am not really complaining! Our grosses were very good!

The owner of the unit (I was manager "on the road")had done a fine job of framing it, on a trailer that could be pulled by a van. The 20 x 30 top and sidewall (special made, heavy dark canvas)carried in the van. Tent poles and banner line poles carried under the floor of the trailer. Lights, cables, sound system, ticket box, bally platform and banners traveled in the trailer.

Four people are needed to work it. Girl, 'gorilla', inside lecturer, and ticket seller. I had a young man who could double on the ticket box and inside talker, so we alternated.

I hadn't worked under canvas in 40 years, but by the second week out, (I had a good crew) we got it up and down in a couple hours. I could apple stick the cables faster than any of the crew!

If you plan to do the GHOST, go to an experienced builder! You'll save money in the long run.

If you want to see the last remaining traveling Gorbora the Gorilla Girl in action, come to the Battle of Magicians in Canton, Ohio in May. Professor Dermeer will be exhibiting his unit with the help Big Foot stepfather, Phillip Morris.

"Gorilla, Gorilla. You will actually long stragley hair grow down over her body. Her nostrils will widen and deepen into the huge hairy beast that once walked the face of the earth. Gorilla, Gorilla",

Don't miss this opportunity to see Gorbora alive in captivity at the Battle of Magicians!
