I have always been interested in magic with BIC round stic pens (the ones that are white with black caps) Here's a list of the effects I have accumulated over the years: -Recap (Off the Cuff, Gregory Wilson) -Breaking Point (Close-up Fantasies II, Paul Harris) -Permanent (DVD, Chris Ballinger and Magic Geek) -Flipstick move (The Very Best of Flip! - Volume 4, Flip) -Electronic Rating Pen (gaff and pamphlet) -Shrinky Ink (gaff and pamphlet, Dan Harlan) -Psychokinetic Pen (gaff and pamphlet, Banacheck) -Compression (DVD, Daniel Lachman) -Pen Thru Arm (gaff and pamphlet, Jesse Feinberg) -Magicap (gaff and pamphlet, Jesse Feinberg) -Chameleon Pen (gaff and pamphlet, Fantasio) Those are just some of them. |

-Impromptu Hit Man. (Rune Klan. Vanishes, transpositions, etc.). No gaffs. You should be good at coin sleight of hand and adept at the Flipstick move. Magic Magazine 2004 March issue, or Joshua Jay's Talk About Tricks DVD's.
-The Cap, The Coin and The Marker. (Manuel Muerte. A marker and a coin appear, disappear, reappear, grow, travel, etc.). Flicking Fingers, the Movie DVD. -A Little Trick. (David Stone. A coin and pen appear and disappear alternately). Basic Coin Magic V.1 DVD. |

-Sharpie Shrink. (Garrett Thomas. A regular sized Sharpie is pushed into the hand and comes out as a Mini Sharpie). Inside the Mind of Garrett Thomas V.3 DVD - Son of ReCap. (Apollo Robbins variant handling of Wilson's Re-Capped). Cultural X-Change V.2 (w/Shoot Ogawa). - Cap-tivating. (Doug Brewer. Three coins are cleanly produced one at a time from a pen cap). The Unexpected Visitor DVD - Pen and Drink Routine. (Jason Wethington. Amalgam of coin flurry, coin from pen cap, silk and Chinese coin, ending with a drink production). Tied DVD. |

I do a broken and restored pencil routine. You prety much just snap it in half with your two hands and the gimmmick allows you to bring the hands together and show an unbroken pencil.

Greg Wilson has a new routine with a Bic Pen that looks great. I think it's being discussed in the Latest and Greatest Forum.

Bizzaro has some great thinking on his CD-ROM "A Marked Man". It has some great magic using Sharpies.
Check out this review I wrote about "A Marked Man" I was thrilled to meet Bizzaro at a Magic Meeting, here in Las Vegas. Bizzaro had several effects which he was demonstrating and his CD-ROM containing an E-Book on Sharpie markers...caught my attention. Price: $10.00 (US) Format: CD-ROM (For Computer Use Only) Contents: PDF file containing nine effects with a Sharpie marker and short Video demos showing the effects in action. I liked all of the effects taught on this CD-ROM, as most are easy to do. Some will require a little set-up, however that should not stop you from performing them. So, let's get right into the effects taught. APPEARING MARKER This is a "flash" appearance of a Sharpie marker from seemingly nowhere. In this effect there is a sleight to learn, which is explained in detail in the PDF. Pictures are included to assist in learning. The effect has some subtle misdirection involved, but intermediate level performers should have no problem with this effect. COLOR CHANGING CAP As you might have guessed, the cap of the Sharpie changes color. Bizarro suggests using a well known ruse to assist in this startling change. The marker is apparently shoved up your nose and then retrieved from your mouth. The cap changes color during this by-play. There is an easy sleight to learn to achieve this illusion. Most beginners will be able to perform this. DOUBLE ENDED This is not really a Magic effect at all, but more of a gag. Bizzaro explains and shows in the demo, how this is to look. Remove the cap from the Sharpie, only to find it was placed on the wrong (rounded) end. Attempt to put the cap onto the other end, only to find out...it too, has no felt point, just another round end. There are absolutely no sleights involved with this effect...anyone can learn this. THRU-THE-FIST VANISH The performer displays the Sharpie on their open right palm. You proceed to do the "Thru-the-Fist" move and place it onto your left palm. You repeat the move with your left hand. On the third time, the Sharpie completely vanishes. This effect teaches a well known technique...which should be easy to learn by all. THAT SHRINKING FEELING This effect utilizes the same technique from "Thru-The-Fist" Only this time a regular sized Sharpie transforms into a miniature sized one. There is a bit more work with this effect, but I believe beginners to intermediate performers should be able to learn this. SNAP, CRACKLE...TWINS In this effect, a regular sized Sharpie is seemingly broken into two separate miniature Sharpies. You will need something extra to accomplish this effect. Bizarro gives you the goods on where to find that certain something...at a very minimal cost. This looks really good on the short demo and you end clean. You can even pass the two miniatures out for inspection, if you so desire. This is more for an intermediate level performer. ITTY BITTY LIVING SPACE In this effect, a Sharpie is produced from a very small leather purse. The illusion created is very visual. The size differential between the Sharpie and the small leather purse...really sells this illusion. Bizzaro gives you the information necessary for finding the small leather purse. There is a lot involved in this effect...so, I would again say that this is geared for intermediate performers. ITTY BITTY LIVING SPACE 2 The effect uses the same props as the above. Only this time, the Sharpie is placed back into the small leather purse and vanishes completely. Not only that, there is a moment where part of your index finger also vanishes into the purse. Yet, you quickly restore your finger and show the purse to be empty. Intermediate performers should be able to make this illusion look great. IT'S IN THE MONEY This is included as a Bonus effect on the CD-ROM. You borrow a bill from somebody and then produce a Sharpie from within their rolled up bill. Bizzaro incorporates a few of the techniques you learn, to accomplish this effect. This is relatively easy, so all should be able to perform this. All in all, There are some very clever ideas contained on this CD-ROM. Many of the effects taught should inspire your creative thinking. Soon you will be showing off your arsenal of Sharpie effects. There is a fair amount of information on "A Marked Man"...so it was well worth the $10.00 price. You can check it out at Bizzaro's website: http://www.smappdooda.com/ Best Magical Regards, Mark Williams

Mis-led is a bill penetration effect using a pencil.
Smashed is another effect using a pencil and a coin.

John Carney has a nice bill to pen effect called Calligraphic Cash. It's in his book Carneycopia and DVD Chicarnery.

General Grant out in Boston marketed several effects using those white pens with the black caps. One was called End To End - Pen turns around as it's being pushed through your fist.
There was another effect wherein you separated the cap from the pen on the table and the pen jumped right into the cap. I forgot the name at the moment. Steve Dusheck and Larry White put out a number of pen effects. Kevin James as well as Steve Draun and many other performers have the Vanishing pen (pen attached to .... to make it vanish). Not that this is strictly a pen effect but Ring on Pen or Pencil comes to mind. There was also an effect years ago by Michael Weber produced by Johnson Products which was called Weber's Key (I think). It was a Pen through the eye hole of a key. There is also Double X and several effects using this type of a pen. Steve Fearson had a Pen From Anywhere. Tip Pen (Larry White), Psycokinetic Pen , Telekinetic Pen and several others that do the same thing. Kevin King also had a shrinking pen effect which he sold. Markr |

I'm reviving this eight-year-old thread to see if people have any more suggestions-- either stuff that has come around since the last post back in 2009, or old stuff that was missed.
My particular interest in pen magic is that I'm a writer and I'm looking for fun effects I can integrate into the act of signing books. I'd rather not carry too many gimmicked pens with me, so ideally it would be things I could do with a normal pen (or if it's a gimmicked pen, something that's really special.) I'm also interested in effects that would leave the spectator with some sort of written memento of the trick in their book -- something like "A Personally Significant Twist" from "Astonishing New Twists With Paul Harris' Reality Twister." PS: There's one other old thread I found on this topic. For completeness sake you can find it at: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=4 |

I just saw the revived thread and, ironically, my suggestion is old....Martin Lewis had a color-changing pencil that was simple and looked pretty cool. PM if you are interested.
Jay Sankey published a very visual effect where you push a bic-style pen into the cap....I can't recall if you are left with a short, capped pen or if you are left with a cap that, when you look inside, you see the end of the pen down inside it. And, of course, Gregory Wilson's Pointless is brilliant routine. |

Cheap and easy, fast and fun.
One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.

Thanks for the suggestion!
Looking at this video review of Sharp This, it seems like you need a slightly unnatural move to start drawing the line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxn7hNFMxyg Have you found that to be so? Or is it just that in this case, the reviewer had only recently gotten the pen and hadn't gotten the hang of making it look natural? |
