I saw Cellini perform in Switzerland. He just sucks the crowd in and holds them. He's a very good sleight of hand artist, but his routines are quite simple.

simplicity.....hum...what a concept.....cellinis magic is graceful and poetic....hes a great sleight of hand guy...but not cards...balls...cigerrettes rope ....he does some really nice stuff....but its the art of sucking them in as you say that's the thing

Greetings and Salutations Koz,
How goes the Cellini projects? I've got pesos burning a hole in my pocket, and I need a Cellini fix! To Simply, I, too, believe you have Cellini confused with some other magician. Charming, gentle and warm are the first words I would use to describe him. Talented, knowledgeable and sharing would be among the next. But then, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and either one of you could have been having an off day. Joe in KC Make magic happen, live a great adventure. |

There are basically three traditional clown types: the Pierrot (whiteface), the Auguste (charicature, exageration), and the Charlie (tramp clown). Cellini's chosen clothing, hats, and personae are "Charlie". It could be that upcoming younger generations may not have as much appreciation of this historical type, because the rather humorous tramp image has become extinct and has been replaced by the image of "homeless". This image arose during the 1980's when the numbers of homeless people multiplied rapidly. I have thought a lot about this because I am a life-long fan of "Charlie" clown humor: Chaplin, Emmett Kelly, Otto Griebling, and yes, Cellini. I was lucky enough to become acquainted with Cellini about 12 years ago. He is a very sweet, kind gentleman, although he has the necessary toughness to work the streets for over 20 years. The balls that Cellini sells are the Eric Evans Monkey Fists, and they are georgeous indeed.
The two-toned leather is absolutely striking, and I defy you to find the start and stop on the weaving. Eric is a master at the handwork he does! BroDavid

My wife made me a set of pouches from Cellini's design in his lecture notes. I use them in my Renaissance and 18th Century Act and I love them.
Not only are pouches traditional, having been used by street magicians for centuries, but they allowed me to eliminate going into my prop box to get stuff while I am performing. They also allow me to carry things around since I don't have pockets in my kilt. I also use them as a servante the way that the period magicians did and Jim did when he had his gypsy character. It just proves that older ways still work today and had a practical reason for being used in the first place.

Greetings and Salutations,
This one's for Koz. I was looking for something I had posted previously and found this thread. How are the Cellini tapes coming along? My pocket's on fire! Any rumors as to a possible completion date? Stick to Kozmo-time, get it done right, and keep us posted. Thanks, and have fun playing in the street. Kos,
Looking forward to the new dvds. What I would really like to see is a video of Jim telling stories of the street. He tells a great story about a street guy up in Greenwitch Village who did one trick: the Coin in the Bottle. I know there must be hundreds more. He may even have a funny story about Eric. Seriously, though, Jim is a great reconteur. Patrick |

You are absolutely right Patrick. And when Jim tells that story, with his colorful style, and all of the body english and vocal inflections, you almost see the whole scene with all the people, and the one trick guy.
That particular story has so many nuggets of real world tips, and info in it, that it is priceless all by itself. And I would love to hear more of them too. Because with Jim, it isn't just a story, it more like an illustration (a mini lecture) of numberous performing points, which if you aren't careful, you could miss just because you are being so entertained. But with a DVD you could replay it over and over, and continue to mine Jim's words for those precious nuggets of street understanding. BroDavid
